and to conclude the current state of the school it all started with.
live in Meppel, small town, north Netherlands about 27k people. 130 km from Amsterdam. Was born there, still live there, but work anywhere. So traveling is part of my nature. > in trains a lot,
Welcome to my office. Started as graphic designer > B UT did not finish education > but had the opportunity to start a brand department at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, I/M/D, next generation designers
Work in a informal network of people, from design to business development, network includes people aging from 16 to almost 60 .
Or as Ben Hammersley phrased perfectly last Wednesday. I keep work and play , new projects . events , make proof, have proven concepts
Invited to talk somewhere, impact of tech . My ride was Peter . Principal of a school. Did the talk. Car back home. Talk included short of Ken Robinson , the ‘my only hope for the future’ bit. Intense meeting way back, macbook per student project, etc. Still everything to be decided upon and as we found out, our kids were almost same age. So we had a common goal.
Make it an inspirational example, changing education, one school at a time. April last year, hurry, architect selection. World > need the best. I nvited 22 in one week ,

kick-off meeting. Mix of people: educational specialists, designers, advisor to the chief government architect, educational technologists, alderman of the city of Meppel, parents, teachers and students, plus John Moravec, Jeff Jarvis, and Ken Robinson. What if we can build our dream school??
ken robinson live from toronto, Jeff Jarvis from NYC, John Moravec from Minneapolis. Incredible energic session. Tweet led to reply from New Zealand. > Birth of the project. Share everything we learn in order to make everything better.
Relation of the project to the actual school. The project is about the latest, maximum, from everywhere. What makes this project unique is that we have an actual PROTOYPE place, where we can test and learn. And obviously everything openly shared.
The foundation as a firm basis to work from. By making it formal, Roel, Ellen and I committed ourselves to the project.
A theory — or — the problem where we focus on.
Small story of Irma, neonatologist — doctor for early born babies. About the possibility to learn anything and how you end up with a package you have to live with the rest of your life .
context instantly affects everything — where you get born, who your parents are, etc. But that should not limit possibilities later.
we call in the education waterfall . Just like in a design process, where you constantly make choices to end up with a final result. Every test and decision you make, will eliminate a future possibility . Thing is, you are not always making these decisions consciously. Do you remember the decisions you made when you were 12?
You get educated out of your full potential . There is no undo available. At the end you get a diploma for everything you did not become .
Research shows decline of creativity. 98% just before primary school , 35 after primary school , only 10% left after secondary school and 2% after higher education . Safe to say that school kills creativity.
See that yellow line? Would be nice if we can keep it up as long as possible. We try to close the dreamgap . Because it can be that you will never find your dream or talent if you do not know what else is out there. Example Steven, tedxyouth. He thinks he can sing. How will he know? We’re not excluding schools, on the contrary.
