Editor's Notes
Hi my name is Shaina, this is Erin and Steven. We did our multimedia project on the reading What’s the Matter with kids today by Amy Goldwasser from chapter fourteen.
This is a quote by Amy Goldwasser that introduces us to her reading.
We believe the internet is a positive tool for adolescents for many reasons. Communicating and Research are two main reasons why we believe this.
The internet is used for communicating in many ways.
You can use it for e-mailing your friends and family. It is used by companies to make advertisements. Another great use for e-mail is sending files, whether it be an essay to your professor, a spreadsheet to your co-worker, or even pictures and vides to friends.
Blogs allow people to get out their feelings and share their ideas. A lot of people encourage blogging because it gets adolescents free writing about their own lives.
Twitter is used for multiple reasons. Blogging about current events is one way people use twitter. Many famous actors and actresses use twitter for their fans to follow them during their daily lives. Twitter is also used by politicians to gain supporters.
Facebook is used to interact with friends and family. It is a communication tool that is a member only site. Many people use this source to keep in touch with close friends and even friends and family who live far away. People who are members of this site can upload photos and videos to share with their friends. Facebook is also used for sharing personal interests.
Instant messaging is used for immediate communicating. It allows you to talk directly with one person or a group of people through chatting. People use instant messaging to communicate with friends, family, and professors.
Online advertisement profits many people. The company advertising pays the website it uses which gains money needed in order to run. The advertising company also profits because it gets people interested about the product they are selling. If you click on an advertisement the internet loads you to their website which allows for online shopping. Online shopping is essential for people who are busy and don’t have time to go out and shop.
The internet is vital for educational purposes. Since the development of technology and the increasing use of the internet, many colleges today are able to have online courses. Also, professors use the internet to give assignments, provide grades, and have classroom discussions.
Due to the advancement in technology the internet is used for many research topics. Starting form a young age, students learn how to perform research by using the internet. There are many sources to use for researching topics on the internet, such as, online encyclopedias, news forums, and search engines.
This quote in Amy Goldwasser’s reading proves how important the internet is for researching. Now, students are able to go further with assignments because of the accessibility to gain certain information from the internet.
Online encyclopedias are used for researching numerous topics. Internet encyclopedias are large databases full of useful information, accessible via internet. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia used for researching mainly any topic of interest. Online Brittanica is used for researching topics from history to science, and all subjects in between. Music encyclopedias are used to research musical subjects from certain instruments to famous composers.
Online news forums are used to view current events, weather information, and everyday news in your community. A few highly used news forums include CNN, MSN, and Boston.com.
Online search engines are essential for researching places to find useful information on the subject of interest. Some search engines include Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, AOL, and overture. Search engines are essential to the internet because they allow people to easily access information about certain issues.
There are always going to be people who disagree with the subject of interest. In this case, although we believe that the internet is a positive tool for adolescents; the older generation and the National Endowment for the Arts believe that the internet is harmful to them.
A large group of the older generation believes that the internet is destructive to adolescents because they did not experience it growing up. People do not like what they are not used to and in this case, the older generation is not used to the internet and thus, do not understand the many ways it can be useful.
Lessing believes the internet has “seduced a whole generation into its inanities”, because she probably has only taken in the bad concepts of the internet and not the many positive concepts. Again, people fear the unknown and because Lessing is used to hand written assignments and researching through hard copy books she is prejudice against the internet.
The National Endowment for the Arts is a group who also believes the internet is a negative tool for adolescents.
This is a quote from Amy Goldwasser’s reading about the NEA’s view on the negative effects of the internet. They say that although teens are spending 16.7 hours a week reading and writing online it does not count as effective reading. Their research showed that “literary reading declined significantly in a period of rising internet use”; however we need to consider the amount of time teens spent reading and writing when the internet was not used as abundantly as it is today. In our opinion if teens are reading and writing on their own time, as well as during the time they spend on homework, then why should we be complaining?
The internet is a positive tool in today’s society. There are those who say “Nay” but we say “Yay”! Without the internet, tasks that we take for granted, such as finding out who every President in the united States was, would be a difficult process. The internet is a positive tool for adolescents, just use it!
