Skeps hives
Skeps hives (hollowed or shaped like a basket) are
made of straw or grass. There is a single entry point
with no internal structure so the colony is left to
produce its own comb. The colony has to be
destroyed for extracting the honey, after driving the
bees out of the skep.
5. Mud and clay hives
Mud hives are extended, long cylinders made with
a blend of dung, straw, and unbaked mud while
clay hives are built of baked clay, primarily used for
maintaining a reduced number of colonies. One
end of the hive is smoked to drive the bees out.
