• Keep these people in mind as you
• Pray for them, even now!
• Think about what it means to share the gospel
with someone
• Have you had opportunity to share TWTL?
Share how you went seeking to share the
gospel with someone
3
4. Following Through
• Sharing the gospel isn’t something you “do” to
someone. It’s not a hit-and-run exercise.
• It’s an ongoing process, motivated by love, with the
goal of seeing your friends and loved ones saved and
living in right relationship with God
• Sometimes the gospel is shared progressively over
weeks, months, or even spread over years
• Sometimes they respond immediately
• Very often they respond slowly over time
• You need to be ready to follow through!
4
5. If the person is converted
It is crucial that a new Christian be established in the
faith as soon as possible.
The content of follow-up:
• Assurance of salvation
• Christian living
• Bible reading
• Prayer
• Fellowship and church
• Evangelism
5
6. If the person is converted
The form of follow-up:
• Flexible to suit the needs of the person
• Regular Bible reading together (start with one of the
Gospels)
• Follow-up Bible studies for new Christians
• Basic discipleship study
• Free-form discussion of how things are going
6
7. If unconverted but interested
A person may be vaguely positive (or at least not
negative) towards the gospel:
• Discover the level of interest and offer alternatives
• Suspend your assessment until the person makes clear
where they stand or whether they want to proceed
• Arrange some kind of follow-up
• Make sure they know how to become a Christian
1. Talk to God
2. Submit to Jesus
3. Keep trusting
7
8. Alternatives
• Bible reading/study, privately or in a group
• A set of investigative (seeker) studies
• Invite the person to your church
• Take the person to a meeting where seekers talk about
Christianity, or to talk to a more experienced Christian
• Recordings of favorite sermons
• Literature (see bibliography in Appendix V)
8
9. Where to from here?
• Once this evangelism class is done, will your
enthusiasm for sharing the gospel fade and die out?
• How can we keep up the momentum, and keep
growing and improving in our knowledge of the gospel
and our sharing of it?
9
10. Where to from here? Pray
• For boldness
• For opportunities
• For a love of people around you
• For a deepening conviction of the truth of the gospel,
leading to a deeper motivation to share it with others
• For specific people
• For growth of God’s kingdom
• For growth of your local church
10
11. Where to from here? Prepare
In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being
prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a
reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness
and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so
that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
(Colossians 4:6)
• Studying the Bible (a good “Study Bible” is helpful)
• Reading useful books (intro apologetics, evangelism, &
conversation tactics)
• Praying
• Practicing talking to others
• Working out how you would answer the basic questions
people ask (this comes through reflection before and after
conversations)
11
12. Where to from here? Persevere
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who
is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and
his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of
season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience
and teaching. (2 Timothy 4:1-2)
• Share the gospel “in season and out of season” whenever
there is opportunity
• Trust God for results (faithfulness is the key)
• Keep praying (for humility, boldness, opportunity, and zeal)
• Teach other people your skills (this helps you to keep using
them)
• Fellowship with other evangelistically-minded Christians
12
