Body: Damp areas provide the most ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth, which is why walls,
windows, and toilets are all very susceptible to mold problems. If you’ve spotted what you think is mold
growing in your house, it’s best to act fast and remove it to better ensure the safety and health of yourself and
your family.
The best option is to hire a professional wall mold removal company. If you live in a big city like Toronto,
Montreal, or Ottawa, you should have no problem finding professionals who offer mold removal services.
Sometimes, however, if the mold contamination is minor, you may attempt to remove the mold yourself. If you
do this, keep in mind that household methods work best only when mold growth is limited and manageable. In
situations where it has become difficult, if not impossible, to tackle effectively on your own, it’s best to contact
a professional mold removal company. If and when you do choose to remove mold on your own, here are
some things you should pay close attention to:
1. You must wear proper protective clothing to avoid coming into physical contact with mold. You should
wear household gloves that cover your arms, and goggles that protect your eyes from mold spores.
Also, according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), you should wear a specialized, N‐95
respirator (a dust mask found at most hardware stores) to avoid inhaling airborne mold spores during
the mold removal.
2. Prepare a solution by mixing a regular strength laundry detergent with warm water. The ratio should
be 1 tablespoon to each 3 gallons of water. Now, use the solution to scrub off the moldy windows and
walls. Use a hard, abrasive and stiff cleaning pad or brush to clean off the mold and mildew. Once
you’re finished cleaning the moldy areas, make sure to dry them off with a clean cloth or towel. If the
windows in your home are made of wood, use a wood floor cleaner instead of detergent.
3. If the detergent solution doesn’t help you get rid of the mold, you can use a solution made from
biocide. Chlorine bleach should do the trick. Mix the bleach with water in equal proportions. The EPA
recommends wearing gloves if you’re using strong chemicals or bleach. For your safety, wear gloves
made with neoprene, polyurethane, natural rubber, nitrile, or polyvinyl chloride. However, know that a
bleach solution won’t completely kill mold found in porous surfaces such as wood or drywall, as it’s
only able to kill what’s on the surface.
4. After you’ve finished cleaning your home, make sure you completely clean the clothes you wore during
the mold removal process. Wash them with regular detergent but be sure to keep them separate from
all other clothes.
5. Regularly inspect your windows and walls to see if the mold has grown back. If there is any indication
that it has, try to find the source of the mold growth and repair it. This may be a leaky pipe, faucet, or
toilet or simply an inadequate ventilation system. You may also need to strip the wallpaper off of your
walls if it’s the obvious source of the mold infestation. Bear in mind that if the mold problem is big, it’s
2. important to seek the help of a professional mold removal company for wall and window mold
removal.
Summary: Make sure to take proper precautions and wear protective clothes if you clean mold on your own.
However, it’s never a bad idea to reach out for professional help.
