EXERCISE 1

OH ! I´M AFRAID!

Adam was sleeping but suddenly he
opened his eyes and pulled the covers up
to his chin. He stared around his room,
searching the darkness for the “thing”
that was making those scary sounds. The
closet door moved as something banged on
it from the inside.
“Who’s there?” Adam asked in a shaky
voice.
The closet slowly began to open. Adam
jumped out of bed and ran to the closet
door, slamming it shut with his palms. He
grabbed his desk chair and blocked the
door. Then he ran out of his room and
down the hall. His brother’s door was wide
open, and Adam jumped onto David’s bed.
“Adam?” David asked. “What are you
doing in here?”
Adam took David’s arm. “There’s
something in my closet!”
“You probably had a bad dream. Go back to bed.”
Adam yanked the blankets off the bed. “It wasn’t a dream. I was awake, and the closet
door started to open by itself!”
David sighed. “Fine. But when we don’t find anything, you have to promise to leave me alone
for the rest of the night.”
Adam nodded. David took a flashlight from his desk drawer. Then they went to Adam’s
room. Adam stopped in the doorway. He could hear something scratching his closet door.
“Can you hear that?” Adam asked.
David nodded. He walked over to Adam’s bed and pulled the case off one of the pillows. He
opened the pillowcase.
“You open the door very slowly, and I’ll grab whatever it is.”
Adam slid the chair to the side and pulled the closet door open a crack. Something banged
against the door, trying to force it open. Adam took a deep breath and opened the door a
bit more. A small furry creature ran right into the pillowcase.
“I got it!” David said, closing the pillowcase and holding it in the air.
“What is it?” Adam moved closer as David peeked inside.
David put the pillowcase on the bed and an orange cat climbed out. Adam scooped the cat
up. “Apricot? How did you get trapped in my closet?”
David laughed. “The poor cat. If I was locked in your closet with your stinky shoes, I’d be
banging on the door to get out, too!”
“Poor, Apricot,” Adam said. “You were probably more scared than I was.”

EXERCISE 2

The Catching Tree
Linda looked up at the tree. It was the
biggest tree in town. It was so big that it
caught things that people lost. If something
floated away or blew away, it would usually
be caught in the tree. Linda had lost her kite.
She wanted to climb up and see if it was in
the tree.
She thought she saw it in one of the high branches. She had
to climb it to make sure. The branches were not close to the
ground. They were high up. She needed a ladder to start climbing
up the tree.
She began to climb. In the lowest branches, she found bird nests.
Squirrels chattered at her and ran the other way. She went higher.
She found an old baseball. Then there was a kite that was not
hers. She found someone’s kitten, but it ran away from her. She
went higher still.
A newspaper was caught in one of the branches. A balloon was
trapped in the leaves. There were more birds, too. She went even
higher.
More birds’ nests and angry squirrels greeted her. She found a
paper airplane. Then there was an old shoe, which hung by dirty
laces. Next she found a lady’s hat caught in some twigs. She went
even higher to the top.
At last, she found her kite. She found other things, too.
There was a toy rocket, another newspaper, a tennis racket, and a
TV antenna. There was an eagle’s nest and other things, too.
Before she went down, she shook down all the stuff that belonged
to people. She left the animals alone. They belonged in the tree.
By the time she reached the ground again, the area around the tree
was covered with many things.
Many people were surprised, but they were happy to get
their things back. She was just happy to have her kite.

EXERCISE 3

New Swing Set
Jane had an old swing set. It was rusty. The
paint was coming off. The chains for the swings
were not nice. The plastic was cracked. The rubber
was falling apart. It made Jane sad. She used to
play on it so much. Now it was worn out.
One day, Jane woke up to some loud noises.
Her father was outside. He had
tools and supplies. He had building pieces. There
were boards and bolts. Her old
swing set was gone! She watched him dig holes. He put posts in
the ground. She helped give him tools. He drilled holes. He put up
more boards. He was working very hard!
Jane continued to help her father.
He put up more boards. He used a wrench and bolts. They were
working so hard.
After a long time, Jane saw what they were making. It was a new
swing set.
This was going to be big. It would be nicer than the old one.
They made a slide. They made swings. Then they made monkey
bars. There
was a ladder to climb. There was a tower to play in. There was a
tunnel to crawl
through. It was very exciting.
When they were done, Jane had her friends over. They all
played together.
Even her father played. He never played!
The swing set was nice. It was a whole playground in her back
yard. The best thing was that they had made it together. She liked
working with her father. She liked playing with him, too.
Use the information in the story to answer the questions below.

   1. What was wrong with Jane’s old swing set?

  • 2. EXERCISE 1 OH ! I´M AFRAID! Adam was sleeping but suddenly he opened his eyes and pulled the covers up to his chin. He stared around his room, searching the darkness for the “thing” that was making those scary sounds. The closet door moved as something banged on it from the inside. “Who’s there?” Adam asked in a shaky voice. The closet slowly began to open. Adam jumped out of bed and ran to the closet door, slamming it shut with his palms. He grabbed his desk chair and blocked the door. Then he ran out of his room and down the hall. His brother’s door was wide open, and Adam jumped onto David’s bed. “Adam?” David asked. “What are you doing in here?” Adam took David’s arm. “There’s something in my closet!” “You probably had a bad dream. Go back to bed.” Adam yanked the blankets off the bed. “It wasn’t a dream. I was awake, and the closet door started to open by itself!” David sighed. “Fine. But when we don’t find anything, you have to promise to leave me alone for the rest of the night.” Adam nodded. David took a flashlight from his desk drawer. Then they went to Adam’s room. Adam stopped in the doorway. He could hear something scratching his closet door. “Can you hear that?” Adam asked. David nodded. He walked over to Adam’s bed and pulled the case off one of the pillows. He opened the pillowcase. “You open the door very slowly, and I’ll grab whatever it is.” Adam slid the chair to the side and pulled the closet door open a crack. Something banged against the door, trying to force it open. Adam took a deep breath and opened the door a bit more. A small furry creature ran right into the pillowcase. “I got it!” David said, closing the pillowcase and holding it in the air. “What is it?” Adam moved closer as David peeked inside. David put the pillowcase on the bed and an orange cat climbed out. Adam scooped the cat up. “Apricot? How did you get trapped in my closet?” David laughed. “The poor cat. If I was locked in your closet with your stinky shoes, I’d be banging on the door to get out, too!” “Poor, Apricot,” Adam said. “You were probably more scared than I was.”

  • 4. EXERCISE 2 The Catching Tree Linda looked up at the tree. It was the biggest tree in town. It was so big that it caught things that people lost. If something floated away or blew away, it would usually be caught in the tree. Linda had lost her kite. She wanted to climb up and see if it was in the tree. She thought she saw it in one of the high branches. She had to climb it to make sure. The branches were not close to the ground. They were high up. She needed a ladder to start climbing up the tree. She began to climb. In the lowest branches, she found bird nests. Squirrels chattered at her and ran the other way. She went higher. She found an old baseball. Then there was a kite that was not hers. She found someone’s kitten, but it ran away from her. She went higher still. A newspaper was caught in one of the branches. A balloon was trapped in the leaves. There were more birds, too. She went even higher. More birds’ nests and angry squirrels greeted her. She found a paper airplane. Then there was an old shoe, which hung by dirty laces. Next she found a lady’s hat caught in some twigs. She went even higher to the top. At last, she found her kite. She found other things, too. There was a toy rocket, another newspaper, a tennis racket, and a TV antenna. There was an eagle’s nest and other things, too. Before she went down, she shook down all the stuff that belonged to people. She left the animals alone. They belonged in the tree. By the time she reached the ground again, the area around the tree was covered with many things. Many people were surprised, but they were happy to get their things back. She was just happy to have her kite.
