  15. If nothing else you should have learned from the slideshow be careful what you post openly on the Web.Live and Let Die theme ties into this lecture because of 007 theme. Love or Hate the series James Bond is iconic. It is a series that spansMany generations. For some Roger Moore is the iconic James Bond, for me Sean Connery was the best Bond. Later in his career Sean Connery was asked by a reporter, “why do you keep acting?” To which Sean Connery replied, “ I get to be someone other than myself. This struck me as a very valuable lesson because Sean Connery even outside of his James Bond role would be a man many consider to be handsome, and someone who has it all in a job that is able to travel to many different places. Yet even with all that he still wants to be someone else. The lesson I drew from this is be comfortable in your own skin and be happy with the abundant life you have been given. In our jobs we have the opportunity to play many different roles. In our case we don’t have to pretend to be anyone else.
  16. In a recent (Aug 4th 2011) fortune poll people were asked to describe their careers in six words. (http://management.fortune.cnn.com/2011/08/04/your-career-summed-up-in-six-words/)POP Quiz. Before you see any of the responses how would you describe Library and Information Science right now. How would you describe your work in six words? Here are some of the responses so far. My favorite is the third one. Maybe that is one of the reasons our divorce rate is so high. What do you think about this one? “I am a librarian hear me whisper.” I personally don’t think of this in a positive ligt.Hopefully our descriptions are more empowering and energetic than this one.
  17. Another figure from popular culture is Joel Osteen. His is a renowned pastor of a Texas Mega church. I am not a fan but I thought one of his recent books has a message for new graduates. In his book make every day a Friday he talks about the importance of outlook. He says studies show people are happiest on Fridays. People are the saddest on Monday. As the week progresses people tend to get happier because they know the weekend is coming. The reason people are happiest on Fridays are because they have chosen to be happy.I would say to upcoming graduates that how you view something is very important and approaching it with a positive outlook can make a world of difference. Regardless what your circumstances are look for the happiness and silver lining. This approach the can make the difficult times easier to handle.
  18. To summarize point 1 abundant life.1.How do you describe yourself?2. What is your outlook on your job (and life)?3. Why brought you here in the first place (What is your purpose)? I don’t know if you all have experienced this feeling or not but it is perhaps one of the worst feelings in the world. Have you ever misplaced something or walked into a room and forgot why you walked into a room? As you graduate you have a very specific purpose and throughout your studies you approached getting your degree with passion and determination. Don’t forget this moment right now. If it helps you write it down and reflect on it as you move forward. As you move out into the larger room of the world you might forget your purpose or why you decided to pursue a degree in LIS. Those who know their purpose are more confident, and satisfied. You can translate this confidence and purpose into success. This dog here knows his purpose.
  19. For my second point and message I wanted to stress “don’t panic”. This book and icon are a symbol from the pop culture book Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This book was a manual which was written by an Intergalatic traveler and it was meant to provide tips and advice on how to travel across the entire universe while avoiding some of the many dangers. There are several reasons why we shouldn’t panic. The main one reason because we can just Google it.All jokes aside a very interesting tie in is if you type in the phrase the answer to life the universe and everything into Google then it will return the answer to the meaning of life. The answer which may not be that satisfying to you is 42. The connection and tie in is this book the Hitchhiker's Guide. In the book a supercomputer is built to create an equation which solves the question of the meaning of life and the answer is 42.
  20. There are other reasons why you shouldn’t panic. The main ones being you are the superhero or heroine. Here are some of my favorite heros/heroines.This first character is Motoko or The Major. She is a character from Ghost in the Shell. This is a popular movie / manga and TV series. I am most familiar with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Along Complex TV series. In this series The Major is the leader of a counter terrorist organization called section nine. She is a cyborg who fights technology related crimes.Another one of my favorites is Daredevil. He seems the most human to me because of his flaws. He is able to overcome his flaws by honing the rest of his senses and overcome his adversaries.I like storm because she is just a bad ass. Anyone who can control the elements is a force to be reckoned with. But the one that I identify with the most and the one who I have the most knowledge of is Spiderman. In many ways Spiderman is different than all the other superheroes because it seems like his superpowers are the most unstable and as new graduates you all might feel similar about the superpowers that you have developed in the program.
  21. Another message along the don’t panic thing is to recognize that learning isn’t static. You might see several different books or blogs discussing things you didn’t learn or things you wish you had learned in library school. This blog post is from Dec 5th 2011.Just take a look at some of these comments from a recent blog post. One person said I graduated 2ish years ago and here is what I wish someone had taught me: the realistic ins and outs of government administration. Like how it was going to be ridiculously difficult to surplus inventory or how to prepare a budget request or negotiate a contract or understand how state contracts work or how many forms you have to fill out relating to personnel or a basic class on “How to Run a Functioning Library While Attempting to Anticipate Changes that Your Institution Will Make 6 Months from Now without Warning and After You have Signed a Vendor Contract.”The quote that I thought that was the most funny is this one.I feel I actually learned more about how to be a librarian in library school then I did about how to be a lawyer in law school. It only took one year in library school versus three in law. I knew nothing about practicing law when I graduated. At least I knew something about librarianship!Don’t get me wrong I am not poking fun at lawyers. My wife is one but I still thought that this was important example of how library school prepares you for your professional pursuits beyond the degree in comparison to other fields.Yeah. What class are you going to learn that in?The truth is we can’t teach you everything. I think that the quote that sums it up best for me is this one. This is a semi-serious response to a flippant post. I know I’m risking letting a little professional idealism slip through. But an MLS by its very nature should prepare graduates to learn what they didn’t learn in library school. We could debate about the merits of an MLS for a long time, but at the core it’s a degree that’s all about learning how to learn and assisting other people in learning. Surely we should be able to turn that knowledge and discipline around and just learn whatever skill we think we need for a given situation. Most librarians, again by virtue of the jobs they work, have access to a wealth of information on a daily basis. Most librarians will also have some down time in the day that they can use to take advantage of those resources and do some professional development. In sum don’t panic because SLIS has prepared you well. SLIS has stressed internships and work studies. Hopefully you have been able to take advantage of these opportunities in the settings that you would like to work beyond graduation. But as the quote the degree is above learning and you should be able to improve on all the skills you have learned here through your research and search skills.
  22. Here is a summary of the major points under the don’t panic. You are the superhero / heroine. No one is coming to save you.Library school didn’t teach you everything but you have the ability to learn what you need toYou network is strong and willing to support you.Don’t feel like you have to leave school forever. We are here and we like to hear updates from you and to see how you are doing. If you have a database question or a question in archives reference or any other field shoot us an email. Also when you are applying to jobs use your network to scope the place out first.Homework assignment. Everyone go sign up for linkedin if you haven’t already and join the USC SLIS Alumni group. This group is part of your network in addition to your instructors and places of work. Use this to find a job post a job or just get feedback about a situation. Do you need to collect some data? This might be a good way to do it. Do you need to advertise a conference or opportunity use your network to spread the word.
  23. The last point is to boldly go forth. Go forth with confidence in your abilities.
  24. As you move forward think about your degree in the largest sense. As much as we would like you to you may not be able to land that first job specifically in reference or specifically in children’s lit. Don’t give up. You can still apply those skills you love, still interact with the same population and still have a strong impact on society. The revolution will not be televised. The biggest changes that are going to occur will occur off the map and the jump on the scene. If you don’t have your ear to the ground you will miss the change, miss the bus and be at home watching the revolution take place. Also it is very important to remember that you still might need to make the case for the value of Library and information Science because people might not know the value. You can make your case in a variety of ways. Rely on quantitative methods, qualitative methods, and anecdotes or stories that empower you to do your job with a day to day basis with passion and energy. There is no substitute for someone coming up and saying thank you for helping my child learn to read. Thank you for helping me to complete a research paper. You need to cherish the thank yous and if you aren’t in a job that gives thank yous your coworkers will appreciate you being thankful and having a positive outlook
