Working With Roofing Contractors

Following a storm, hurricane or an earthquake, you may need to hire a roofing contractor to help
with the damages on your roof. Unfortunately, this is the time when unlicensed and uninsured
roofing companies are preying on unsuspecting homeowners. To find out the importance of
hiring a reputed roofing company, you need to look at the number of consumer complaints that
the Better Business Bureau (BBB) received in the last year. According to statistics published on
BBB website, there were a total of 10,000 consumer complaints against roofing contractors.

According to the BBB, the two most crucial factors to keep in mind while searching for reputable
roofing contractors are licensing and bonds. Most of the roofers listed in yellow pages and
newspaper classified ads are not insured, licensed and bonded. Since they are unable to get
word-of-mouth references from past clients, they prey on homeowners that use these sources
of information to look for service providers. Besides insurance and licensing, you need to make
sure that the contractors you are about to hire are experienced and qualified. Listed below, are
some of the dos and don’ts when hiring a roofing company.

The Dos

- Make sure that you have reported all the roof damages to your insurance provider.
- Keep records of all the paperwork pertaining to the repair work done on your roof, for example,
work orders.

- Request your friends, neighbors and relatives to provide you with references to companies in
your area. To ensure that you are getting the right service provider, ask the following questions:

- Did the roofer complete the work on time and budget?
- Did the roofer offer warranty on the work done?
- Was the roofer courteous?
- Request the companies to provide you with price estimates.

- Opt for roofing companies that are willing to work with your insurance company. If you have a
homeowners insurance coverage, there is no need of digging deep into your pocket when the
insurance company can take care of the expenses. The price estimate should include labor and
materials.

- Request the roofer to provide you with a signed contract. Signed contract will safeguard you in
the future in case the roofer decides to inflate the cost after the work is completed.

The Don’ts
- Do not hire a company that sub-contracts the work.
- Do not hire someone that demands payment in cash up front.
