12. 12. The Goal of Exegesis
TO UNDERSTAND…
What the original author was talking about (Theme)
What the original author wanted to focus on (Topic)
What the original author wanted to say to his original audience about what he was talking about (Truth)
Why the original author was saying this (Thrust)
13. 13. Effective Exegesis
You need to understand…
Different types of biblical literature
Biblical history and secular history
The history of Christianity and the church
Religious practices of the people
Manners and customs of the people
Important persons who played key roles
Biblical languages
Theology
14. 14. Life Sharing
(How to share God’s wordeven though you don’tknow much about exegesis)
15. 15. Step 1: Summarize one of your Life Journal entries into a turning point.
Review one of your Life Journal entries.
Get one key idea and summarize it into one crisp sentence. This will be called “Turning Point”.
Work on that sentence until you can phrase it in the most memorable way possible.
Example:
Passage: 1 Kings 4:29, 11:9
Summarized truth: “Being wise is not about having wisdom but about doing wisdom.”
16. 16. Step 2: Determine why people need to know this Turning Point.
Imagine what would happen if people do not know this Turning Point.
Think of specific instances or occasions where this Turning Point would be so important or applicable.
Figure out why people don’t know this Turning Point or why people choose to disobey it.
Write down your thoughts.
17. 17. Step 2: Determine why people need to know this Turning Point.
Example:
Truth: “Being wise is not about having wisdom but about doing wisdom.”
Why people need to know this truth:
People think that being wise is all about having wisdom or knowledge. But having wisdom or knowledge per se does not guarantee that our lives would be okay.
18. 18. Step 3: List specific actions that people can do to apply it.
Ask yourself, “How would people apply this Turning Point in real life?”
Think of specific situations and show how this Turning Point can be applied.
Write down your thoughts.
Example:
Obey God’s wisdom in the area of relationships, even though you feel otherwise.
19. 19. Step 4: Envision what would happen if people apply it.
Think about the results of applying this Turning Point.
Come up with possible scenarios if this Turning Point is applied faithfully.
Write down your thoughts.
Example:
If you follow God’s wisdom, you would begin to see that God’s wisdom is wiser than your wisdom.
20. 20. Step 5: Put your thoughts in proper order and share them.
Why people need to know this Turning Point:People think that being wise is all about having wisdom or knowledge. But having wisdom or knowledge per se does not guarantee that our lives would be okay.
The Turning Point : “Being wise is not about having wisdom but about doing wisdom.” (1 Kings 4:29, 11:9)
How this Turning Point can be applied:Obey God’s wisdom in the area of relationships, even though you feel otherwise.
What would happen if this Turning Point is applied:If you follow God’s wisdom, you would begin to see that God’s wisdom is wiser than your wisdom.
