Located in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City,
St. Peter’s Square is one of the most widely
recognized squares in Italy and serves as a popular
gathering place for tourists from around the globe.
Although the square is quite busy most days of the
year, it sees the largest number of visitors during the
pope’s weekly address and on important Christian
holidays like Christmas and Easter.

3.  Construction of the massive square began
in 1656 under the direction of sculptor and
architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and was
completed a little over a decade later in
1667. People who visit St. Peter’s Square
today can still see Bernini’s masterful
architectural work that includes fountains,
columns, and large colonnades topped
with beautiful statues depicting important
figures in the history of the Catholic Church.
