The use of illicit drugs is bad enough, but taking them in great quantities is extremely dangerous. In the beginning, all it takes is one dose to feel the buzz and get into that euphoric state. Eventually, users would need more to get the same effect and make it last. By increasing the dosage, they make themselves at risk for overdosing on drugs.

1. The Dangers of Overdosing on Drugs
The use of illicit drugs is bad enough, but taking them in great quantities is extremely
dangerous. In the beginning, all it takes is one dose to feel the buzz and get into that euphoric
state. Eventually, users would need more to get the same effect and make it last. By increasing
the dosage, they make themselves at risk for overdosing on drugs. Found below are
some dangers of overdosing on illegal substances.
Dangers of Overdosing #1: Organ Damage
One of the dangers of overdosing is organ damage. It is no secret that the use and abuse of
overdosing on drugs greatly affect the body. There are specific organs which are affected by
drug use, and these are the liver and kidneys. Drug use significantly raises the body’s
temperature, causing organ failure. Heroin and inhalants can cause damage to the liver, and
these—along with MDMA and PCP—can cause damage to the kidney.
Dangers of Overdosing #2: Brain Damage and Coma
Brain damage and coma are also dangers of overdosing on drugs. The effects of the drugs on
the body can in turn affect the brain. For instance, if the heart or lungs stop functioning due to
overdose, there can be permanent brain damage. An individual who overdoses on drugs can
also slip into a coma. Coma is defined as the ‘state of prolonged unconsciousness’. The
individual usually remains in an unconscious state for a few weeks. If a person stays in a coma
for a longer period of time, he or she may eventually stay in a persistent vegetative state; some
never awaken from a coma. The recovery of a patient after slipping into a coma depends on the
2. amount of damage the brain has suffered. Some wake up and return to normal; others have to
relearn basic tasks.
