January 30,1882- April 12, 1945

FDR’s Political Career (New York)
• In 1910 President Roosevelt was invited to run
for the New York State Senate Seat (age 28)
• He broke away from the family tradition and
joined the Democratic party
• In 1912 President Roosevelt was appointed
Assistant Secretary of the Navy
• In 1914, Franklin Roosevelt, decided to run for
the U.S. Senate seat for New York.
FDR’s Political Career (Federal)
• Elected President in 1932
• With the country mired in the depths of the Great
Depression, Roosevelt immediately acted to restore
public confidence, proclaiming a bank holiday and
speaking directly to the public in a series of radio
broadcasts or “fireside chats”
• Reelected by comfortable margins in 1936, 1940 and
1944, President Roosevelt led the United States from
isolationism to victory over Nazi Germany and its allies in
World War II
• The only American president in history to be elected four
times
