doubt
Always use the subjunctive if the clause comes after
an expression of doubt, disbelief, uncertainty.
Here are some common expressions that
would signal the use of the subjunctive:
Dudar No creer
Es dudoso No estar seguro(a)
No es cierto No pensar (e-ie)

I doubt that they are serving breakfast.
Dudo que sirvan el desayuno.
(“sirvan” from verb “servir” is in present subjunctive)
5. Examples…
It is doubtful that she will send us the
money.
Es dudoso que ella nos mande el dinero.
(“mande” from verb “mandar” is in present subjunctive)
6. Examples…
She isn’t sure if he will pay.
Ella no está segura que él pague.
(“pague” from “pagar” is in present subjunctive).
7. Examples…
We don’t believe that you will attend.
No creemos que asistas.
(asistas from “asistir” is in present subjunctive)
8. CUIDADO…
WATCH OUT!
Expressions that are the OPPOSITE of doubt,
disbelieve and uncertainty WILL NOT USE THE
SUBJUNCTIVE!
Here are the opposite expressions that
mean you would NOT use subjunctive:
No dudar Creer
No es dudoso Estar seguro,a
Es cierto Pensar

I do not doubt that he will win.
No dudo que ganará.
(“ganará” is in the future indicative tense)
10. Example
She believes that he is the king.
Ella cree que es el rey.
(“es” from “ser” is in present indicative tense)
11. Subjunctive with
adverbial clauses
The subjunctive is used after the following conjunctions because
the information that they introduce is not necessarily real. It may
or may not occur.
para que so that
de modo que so that, in such a way that
de manera que so that, in such a way that
con tal de que provided that
sin que unless, without
a menos qu unless
12. Examples
Marta will not go unless you go also .
Marta no irá a menos que vayas también.
13. Examples
I am going to write to them so that they
know what is going on.
Yo les voy a escribir para que sepan lo
que está pasando.
14. Examples
He will not be able to pay tuition unless
they give him a student loan.
Él no podrá pagar la matrícula a menos
que le den un préstamo estudiantil.
