If you have acne, you might be wondering what are acne
vulgaris home treatment methods that can help you win
the battle. For you to win it, you should first know what
acne vulgaris is. Acne vulgaris, a type of acne, occurs when
oil and dead skin cells clog the skin pores which then
cause blemishes in the skin that is often red and swollen in
form. When there are only a few red spots known as
pimples, this indicate that you have mild acne; however, if
there are more than a few red spots located on the face,
neck, back and chest, this indicate severe acne and can
             cause physical and emotional scars.
Teens are the ones who are often affected by acne and
more than 85% develop a mild form of acne. By early 20s,
    it disappears in most individuals affected by acne;
although there are some, frequently women, who can still
have acne in their 40's or 50's.
There are different types of acne and the most common
type is the one that develops during teen years. Hormone
levels rise during puberty, especially testosterone. Higher
hormone levels signal skin glands to make more oil or
sebum. The oil is released from the pores to protect the
skin and to keep it from dehydration. When excess oil
mixes with dead skin cells, it clogs the skin pores and can
lead to growth of bacteria in the mixture. If it leaks, causes
swelling, redness and pus thus a pimple is born.
There are certain medications that can cause acne to
develop or aggravate; nonetheless, this type of acne
usually clears up when taking that certain medication is
                       stopped.
Even newborns may be affected by acne. This is because
their mothers may pass hormones to them just before
delivery. Acne in newborns can also appear due
hormones. This happens when the stress of birth causes
the body to release hormones on its own. Children and
older adults may also get acne like most teens do.
Acne Vulgaris Home Treatment
Some acne vulgaris home treatment can reduce acne flare-
ups. Here are some acne vulgaris home treatments that
can help you win your battle against acne.
• Wash the affected area of the skin gently once or
                     twice a day.
• Do not squeeze pimples. Squeezing them can cause
infection and aggravate acne. Squeezing pimples can lead
                       to scarring.
• In cleaning your face, water-based skin care
products must be used. Milky cleansers, lipstick, cold
creams, and lip gloss that contain oil should be avoided.
• Nonprescription medicated creams, lotions, soaps,
and gels can be used to treat your acne; however, the
label should be read with care to make sure that the
                product is used correctly.
Here are some examples of non-prescription products that
                 are used to treat acne:
• Benzoyl peroxide (Benoxyl, Benzac, Clearasil)
                unplug skin pores.
• Alpha-hydroxy acid dries up blemishes and causes
the top layer of the skin to exfoliate. Alpha-hydroxy acid is
usually found in moisturizers, eye creams, cleansers, and
                         sunscreens.
• Salicylic acid (Propa pH, Clearasil, Stri-Dex) also
dries up blemishes and exfoliates the skin's top layer.
• Tea tree oil kills bacteria and is found in gels,
                   creams and oils.
• Skin pore-clearing strips may also help clear and
treat acne and improve your skin's overall condition.
When you use these bandage-like strips and peel them off
your skin, dirt and makeup stick to the strip and is
                   removed along with it.
Acne Vulgaris Prevention Tips
Acne cannot totally be prevented; nevertheless, there are
acne vulgaris home treatment steps that you can take to
             keep acne from getting worse.
• Wash your skin gently everyday. Scrubbing too hard
or washing too often should be avoided.
• If you observe that sweat causes your acne to
aggravate, avoid sweating too hard. If you sweat too much
after activities, wash at the soonest possible time.
• If your hair is too oily, it should be washed often
and try to keep you hair off your face.
• Hair care products such as mousses, gels, cream
rinses, and pomades that are too oily should be avoided as
                            well.
• Avoid touching your face.
• Wear soft cotton clothing or moleskin under sports
                       equipment.
• Exposure to oils and harsh chemicals such as
          petroleum should be avoided.
• Avoid too much exposure to the sun. Use sunscreen
when you are out in the sun.
