Subway (METRO) There are only one subway line in Daejeon, and it does not trespass nearby Junmin dong or KAIST main campus so our usage is rather limited. Subway is quite fast and convenient, so sometimes taking it is quite useful, when you make transfers with Buses. Using transportation card or credit card with transportation function is strongly recommended, since you can make transfers for free.

Find train info& make reservation First, go to the Korean Railways website, http://www.korail.com (company name is Korail; Govt. owned) They have English menu on the top, so you won’t face any difficulty. You need to create an ID for their website in order to make reservations. One problem currently they have is that they don’t have all the countries in the list when you select the country. I’ll try to fix it by sending them an email.
31. In & out from daejeon 2. Taking Bus In Korea, we have two kinds of bus that connects cities and towns. Express bus is one that connects major cities – Seoul, Busan, etc. This is the type you will take most of the time. Outer-City bus is one connecting towns and rural areas with cities. If you want to go to some small town or rural places, you take this type. (For East Seoul Station, take this)

34. Making reservation – express bus First, go to their website, http://www.kobus.co.kr Remember not to click the English on top. Also don’t use google translator since it makes weird translations with city names. You first need to select what you want to search from the left select boxes.
35. Making reservation – express bus This is a typical example of what you’ll do. First row, departure, is from Daejeon Govt. Complex. Second row, arrival, is Seoul Express bus terminal. Third row is year, month, day, and time (from what hour) Then, you need to select seat class Last one is choosing number of adults (left) and kids (right) Orange button is make reservation, and blue one how to use list of major places Daejeon [300] Daejeon Govt. 36. Making reservation – express bus A popup like this might appear. It says if you reserve the same day’s bus, you have to pay some service charge when you make cancellation. If you don’t cancel and take the bus, no worries. This kind of popup will appear, too. Informs their service charge policy when you make cancellations 0% when you cancel in the same date that you made reservation or it is 2 days prior to departure 10% when you cancel before the bus departs 20% when you cancel afterwards or didn’t made cancellation without taking it. 38. Making reservation – express bus If you click, a popup will appear andask for your confirmation
39. Making reservation – express bus You then need to select the seat and enter your credit/check card number. ※seat 1,2 are usually for disabled or old people, so rather leave them out. You can also use the account transfer method but using card is more convenient. If you still want to use the account transfer, click the white button next to the green one and enter your info.
40. Making reservation – express bus Important thing that you should know about is that even if you made reservation, you have to get the ticket from the terminal. Show your card that you’ve used during reservation to the ticket window and say you have made reservation. In case they don’t understand, tell them that you’ve, 예약 했습니다 - I’ve made reservation; Yea-yak hait-sup-nida(?) You need to get the ticket to take the bus. Thus you need to arrive at the terminal/stop/station or whatever at least 5 ~ 10 minutes before the departure time to get the ticket. You need to show the card that you’ve used, and that’s why I mentioned that using card is more convenient; if you use bank account transfer, it gets complicated.
41. Supplement – Islamic center We have a praying room in KAIST ICC, but there is an Islamic Center near KAIST main campus, too. If you are interested, give them an email or call. You can get all the necessary info from here, for example where they sell Halal foods.
42. Supplement – Eulji University Hospital Eulji University hospital is a general hospital, having most of the departments in the field of medicine. Their website provides English, http://www.emc.ac.kr/international/default.asp Not all the staff speaks fluent English, but there is someone who can, and it is Sun Mi KIM, a registered Nurse in International Health Service Center of Eulji University Hospital. Her contact number is (042)611-3399, or mobile 010-2621-6444. If you face any difficulty relating to this hospital, you can call her and ask. When you visit the hospital, you need to take your alien registration card with you.
43. Eulji hospital You can get there by taking 705 or 918. 918 is bit more walk (see the map of Govt. Complex Station from page 12 for more details) In Korea, you cannot get most of the medicine without doctor’s approval. After you are treated by doctor, the hospital will give you a paper that lists the medicine you need to take if necessary. Take the document to the nearby pharmacy, and they would sell the listed medicine to you.
44. any questions? If you have any questions, please contact the mentors nearby. Even if you have read this guide, first time might be always tricky. Ask your mentor to sit next you and you can make reservation under her supervision. If you succeed on first time, I’m sure that it wouldn’t be a problem from that time on. Even just for confirmation, ask your mentor to check your reservation for safety. For Seoul, taking train is better if you have business in the northern part of the Han river. Bus might be better for the southern part, both due to the location of Seoul station (train) and Seoul Express Bus Terminal (bus).
