1. Hearing Aids – Your Way!
If you have hearing loss, you may be worried
about what hearing aid styles will be available to
you. With the introduction of advanced digital
hearing instruments, even the most severe
hearing losses can be accommodated. Depending
on your degree of hearing impairment, your lifestyle, and your
cosmetic tastes, you and your hearing healthcare professional will
be able to reach a decision about which style is best for you!
There are seven hearing aid styles available in today’s market:
1. Body Aids
• Similar in size to modern cell phones, wired connected
to a custom earmold
• Typically worn on the torso (in a pocket, on a clip, etc.)
• Provides very powerful amplification for more severe
hearing losses
• May be useful for person’s with vision and dexterity
problems
• Not seen often in today’s fittings
2. Eyeglass Aids

2. 3. Behind-the-Ear (BTE)
• Fits over the top of the ear
• Connects to a custom ear mold or small tip that fits into
the outer ear canal by means of a very small flexible
tube
• Wide variety of styles and sizes from large to nearly
invisible
• Great for kids who may need frequent changes for their
growing ear, since only the ear mold need be replaced
4. Open-fit BTE
• A fairly new innovation in BTE aids connected by very
slim tubes or wires to a small flexible open dome or
custom piece in the outer ear canal
• So small they are nearly invisible
• Gives a more “open” feeling to the ear
• Allows natural sounds to flow in and out
• Reduces the “plugged up”, “barrel” sensation
• Reduces the perception of distortion and loudness
to own voice while wearing hearing aids
5. In-the-Ear (ITE)
• Made to custom fit your individual ear
• Fits into the bowl of the ear and the outer ear canal
• Varies in size from entirely filing the bowl of the ear to
half-filled
• Easy to put in and take out

3. 6. In-the-Canal (ITC)
• Made to custom fit your individual ear
• Fits into the very bottom of the bowl of the ear and the
outer ear canal
• Typically easy to put in and take out
7. Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)
• Made to custom fit your individual ear
• Fits completely in the outer ear canal
• Too small for all of the options that the other styles
may have
• Nearly invisible
• Great with telephone use – no need for additional
accessories
• Not the best option for those with more severe hearing
losses
• Due to its small size, it may not be the best option for
those who have dexterity issues
• May need more repairs than other styles due to wax
buildup
