Adapting to Authentic Listening
 YouTube as comprehensible input
 Madden - “listening from the middle”
 Goal of listening instruction is to prepare
    students to understand actual speech
 Predicting what came before, what’s next,
relationship amongst speakers, the nature of
    the text
 Source: Madden, J. P. (2008). Helping ESL Students Adapt to
Authentic Listening Situations. The Internet TESL Journal, Vol. XIV,
    No. 1. Retrieved from http://iteslj.org/Techniques/Madden-
    AuthenticListening.html.
Motivating Students Through
Movie-Making
 Dana Hazzard (Pusan University) found movie making a
    motivating activity for students
 Teacher guided students through brainstorming and
    script-writing process
 Students poured effort and creativity into the movies not
    normally seen in class
 Students could choose topics, found a place to express
their voice, and publish their work on YouTube
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omAVtLrB1fk
 Source: Hazzard, D. (2006). Motivating ESL/EFL Students to Use
English Through Movie Making. The Internet TESL Journal, Vol. XII,
    No. 12. Retrieved from http://iteslj.org/Techniques/Hazzard-
    MakingMovies.html.
Using YouTube to teach
regional accents and culture
 Many students study accents through phonic transcripts in
    textbooks, which can be frustrating
 Jya-Lin Hwang did a study of student satisfaction after exposing
them to accent study on YouTube
 Searching for “British accent” “Australian accent” etc and having
students write down what they heard as differences
 Especially useful when these native speakers are not on hand
 Showing students YouTube strategies (using pause, timeline bar to
rewind) and giving students skills to explore on their own
 Source: Zhang, L. J., Rubdy, R., & Alsagoff, L. (Eds.). (2009).

    technology situations
