This passage contains the great statement that a cord of three strands is not easily torn apart. We will explore the primary meaning in context and then explore an additional meaning that the n+1 formula in this text suggests, that the plus one is also a reference to God. He is the one who truly provides enduring strength to our human relationships, whether we are looking at a marriage or a friendship. Excluding God leaves us "under the sun" and fending for ourselves.

4. Jesus: Prioritizing Mission over Everything Else. (Dec. 23 & 24) John 1:1-18
John’s gospel begins at an earlier point than the other gospels. Mark begins at Jesus’ baptism and adds nothing to the Christmas story. Matthew and Luke begin with the circumstances of Jesus’ humble birth. But John begins in Heaven with the story of the pre-incarnate Son of God. Heaven’s Prince was a partner with His Father in the work of Creation; “without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3). He was worshipped by angels and shared in the same divine essence possessed by the Father and the Holy Spirit. As the ancient creed says, “He was God of God, Light of light, true God of True God”. In order to accomplish His Father’s Redemptive Mission, to redeem mankind, he voluntarily chose to forego the heavenly privileges of his throne at His Father’s side, and came to earth, was confined to the womb of a young Jewish girl and then was born and placed in a feeding trough, likely in a cave used for birthing lambs. We know so little about Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men whom we have been studying. We are left with the challenge of piecing their lives together. But we have four gospels that describe the miraculous life of Jesus. We see through their four accounts a common picture of a man who consistently prioritized God’s Mission over everything else, culminating in His crucifixion and death. His was a hard life lived perfectly. The challenge before us is whether we will choose to accept His Great Co-Mission, to join Him in prioritizing serving God over security, reputation, comfort, and everything else this world esteems that God sees as less than?

3. Wise Men: Prioritizing Adventure over Comfort. (Dec. 16 & 17) Matthew 2:1-12
The magi were a caste of “wise men.” They were highly honored and held a high rank as priests. This would have put them at the top of their society where they would have enjoyed the finest of things, adding great comfort to their lives. Typically, the magi were Zoroastrian astrologers who looked to the stars for information about future things. However, several hundreds of years earlier, the Hebrew prophet Daniel was referred to a the “Rab Mag”, the chief of the magi. A believer in the God of Israel, Daniel had control of the Persian libraries and added some of the Hebrew prophetic books to the Persian libraries. As these magi studied both the stars and the Hebrew prophecies of God’s Word, they found themselves being challenged to leave a life of comfort in order to take on an adventure, traveling around 715 miles on a combination of Roman roads and desert trade routes. However, their greatest challenge was at the end of their journey where they needed to decide whether to acquiesce to King Herod’s orders and lead him to the prophesied child. This was more of an adventure than they bargained for since now they were not only navigating by way of a star but navigating through a minefield of King Herod’s paranoias.

2. Joseph: Prioritizing Obedience over Reputation. (Dec. 9 & 10) Matthew 1:18-25
Matthew tells us that Joseph had an excellent reputation; he was a righteous man. Matthew also tells us that before they “came together”, that Mary was found to be with child. Matthew never reveals how Joseph found out, but he did. At that moment, Joseph had two options. If he divorced Mary publicly and even insisted upon stoning Mary, his reputation would be restored completely. If he went forward with the marriage, he would be implicated in everyone’s eyes. The lesser measure of putting her away quietly would leave his reputation in ongoing suspicion – the stink would remain on him. Joseph’s dream challenged him to prioritize obedience over reputation. Not only would he be regarded as a sinful man who lacked self-control, but he would also be assuming the most overwhelming of all challenges, to raise God’s Son in the context of a rough Galilean town that would have despised his family. In 1 Corinthians 4 Paul speaks of the damaged reputation of the Christian who is viewed as a fool and the scum of the earth by those who see the gospel of Jesus as folly. We too are challenged to prioritize obedience to God over our reputation with the world. What will it cost you to put God first?

Mary: Prioritizing Trust over Security. (Dec. 2 & 3) Luke 1:26-38
For a young Jewish girl in 1st century Galilee, there were clearly defined roles, a very clear social order. Mary would have got engaged at around 5 years of age. Her father and Joseph’s father would have agreed on a “bride price” and sealed the deal with a wine toast. From that day forward, Mary would have been preparing for her betrothal in her early teens and marriage, 1-2 years later. Her life was scripted to a degree that we can’t easily relate to in our culture. She would have been trained in all the critical tasks a Jewish wife was expected to perform. Mary would have found great “security” as she saw Joseph develop and grow into a solid man of integrity. Mary’s dream would have rocked her world. An unexplained pregnancy was sure to shatter years of plans, hopes and dreams. She was faced with a choice of refusing God’s offer or prioritizing trust in the “otherness” of God’s plan over security in sameness. What do we do when God’s plan shatters our pre-conceived notions of what our life will look like in the future?
4. Eph. 6.10-24_Behind Enemy Lines
The document discusses the results of a study on the impact of climate change on global wheat production. Researchers found that rising temperatures will significantly reduce wheat yields across different regions of the world by the end of the century. Under a high emissions scenario, the study projects a global average decrease in wheat production of 6% by 2050, and a 17% decrease by 2100, threatening global food security.

This week we look at two final examples of how submission to authority works from Ephesians 6:1-9. However, as we look at both children and slaves we see that there is a call to more than voluntary submission; they are called to obey. Once again, we will also see that those in the positions of authority have "God-rails" within which they must stay so as not to abuse their authority. At the end of this sermon we will deal with a truly challenging question: "Why didn't the New Testament authors confront slavery directly? There will be many surprises as we consider how slavery worked in the first century. Also, we will find many direct applications for our roles as parents, children (including adult children), employees and bosses.

The loftiest of all exhortations is found in the opening verse of Ephesians 5: Be imitators of God. This text compares the new life of the Christian to being saints who walk in Christ's light rather than those whose purpose is committing deeds of darkness. When we, as Christians commit "deeds of darkness" we are failing to live into our high calling and God-given identity. A Christian who is defined by immorality and filthy speech is deceiving themselves and likely not a believer at all. Our world has gotten very dark, especially in recent weeks. It is more important than ever that we would be saints of God, who walk in the light of Christ and share his light with others.

In Ecclesiastes 4 we find another meaningful pursuit sandwiched between two meaningless pursuits, as is Solomon's style. The Meaningful Pursuit is the pursuit of companionship. This passage contains the great statement that a cord of three strands is not easily torn apart. We will explore the primary meaning in context and then explore an additional meaning that the n+1 formula in this text suggests, that the plus one is also a reference to God. He is the one who truly provides enduring strength to our human relationships, whether we are looking at a marriage or a friendship. Excluding God leaves us "under the sun" and fending for ourselves.

4. Jesus: Prioritizing Mission over Everything Else. (Dec. 23 & 24) John 1:1-18
John’s gospel begins at an earlier point than the other gospels. Mark begins at Jesus’ baptism and adds nothing to the Christmas story. Matthew and Luke begin with the circumstances of Jesus’ humble birth. But John begins in Heaven with the story of the pre-incarnate Son of God. Heaven’s Prince was a partner with His Father in the work of Creation; “without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3). He was worshipped by angels and shared in the same divine essence possessed by the Father and the Holy Spirit. As the ancient creed says, “He was God of God, Light of light, true God of True God”. In order to accomplish His Father’s Redemptive Mission, to redeem mankind, he voluntarily chose to forego the heavenly privileges of his throne at His Father’s side, and came to earth, was confined to the womb of a young Jewish girl and then was born and placed in a feeding trough, likely in a cave used for birthing lambs. We know so little about Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men whom we have been studying. We are left with the challenge of piecing their lives together. But we have four gospels that describe the miraculous life of Jesus. We see through their four accounts a common picture of a man who consistently prioritized God’s Mission over everything else, culminating in His crucifixion and death. His was a hard life lived perfectly. The challenge before us is whether we will choose to accept His Great Co-Mission, to join Him in prioritizing serving God over security, reputation, comfort, and everything else this world esteems that God sees as less than?

3. Wise Men: Prioritizing Adventure over Comfort. (Dec. 16 & 17) Matthew 2:1-12
The magi were a caste of “wise men.” They were highly honored and held a high rank as priests. This would have put them at the top of their society where they would have enjoyed the finest of things, adding great comfort to their lives. Typically, the magi were Zoroastrian astrologers who looked to the stars for information about future things. However, several hundreds of years earlier, the Hebrew prophet Daniel was referred to a the “Rab Mag”, the chief of the magi. A believer in the God of Israel, Daniel had control of the Persian libraries and added some of the Hebrew prophetic books to the Persian libraries. As these magi studied both the stars and the Hebrew prophecies of God’s Word, they found themselves being challenged to leave a life of comfort in order to take on an adventure, traveling around 715 miles on a combination of Roman roads and desert trade routes. However, their greatest challenge was at the end of their journey where they needed to decide whether to acquiesce to King Herod’s orders and lead him to the prophesied child. This was more of an adventure than they bargained for since now they were not only navigating by way of a star but navigating through a minefield of King Herod’s paranoias.

2. Joseph: Prioritizing Obedience over Reputation. (Dec. 9 & 10) Matthew 1:18-25
Matthew tells us that Joseph had an excellent reputation; he was a righteous man. Matthew also tells us that before they “came together”, that Mary was found to be with child. Matthew never reveals how Joseph found out, but he did. At that moment, Joseph had two options. If he divorced Mary publicly and even insisted upon stoning Mary, his reputation would be restored completely. If he went forward with the marriage, he would be implicated in everyone’s eyes. The lesser measure of putting her away quietly would leave his reputation in ongoing suspicion – the stink would remain on him. Joseph’s dream challenged him to prioritize obedience over reputation. Not only would he be regarded as a sinful man who lacked self-control, but he would also be assuming the most overwhelming of all challenges, to raise God’s Son in the context of a rough Galilean town that would have despised his family. In 1 Corinthians 4 Paul speaks of the damaged reputation of the Christian who is viewed as a fool and the scum of the earth by those who see the gospel of Jesus as folly. We too are challenged to prioritize obedience to God over our reputation with the world. What will it cost you to put God first?

Mary: Prioritizing Trust over Security. (Dec. 2 & 3) Luke 1:26-38
For a young Jewish girl in 1st century Galilee, there were clearly defined roles, a very clear social order. Mary would have got engaged at around 5 years of age. Her father and Joseph’s father would have agreed on a “bride price” and sealed the deal with a wine toast. From that day forward, Mary would have been preparing for her betrothal in her early teens and marriage, 1-2 years later. Her life was scripted to a degree that we can’t easily relate to in our culture. She would have been trained in all the critical tasks a Jewish wife was expected to perform. Mary would have found great “security” as she saw Joseph develop and grow into a solid man of integrity. Mary’s dream would have rocked her world. An unexplained pregnancy was sure to shatter years of plans, hopes and dreams. She was faced with a choice of refusing God’s offer or prioritizing trust in the “otherness” of God’s plan over security in sameness. What do we do when God’s plan shatters our pre-conceived notions of what our life will look like in the future?
4. Eph. 6.10-24_Behind Enemy Lines
The document discusses the results of a study on the impact of climate change on global wheat production. Researchers found that rising temperatures will significantly reduce wheat yields across different regions of the world by the end of the century. Under a high emissions scenario, the study projects a global average decrease in wheat production of 6% by 2050, and a 17% decrease by 2100, threatening global food security.

This week we look at two final examples of how submission to authority works from Ephesians 6:1-9. However, as we look at both children and slaves we see that there is a call to more than voluntary submission; they are called to obey. Once again, we will also see that those in the positions of authority have "God-rails" within which they must stay so as not to abuse their authority. At the end of this sermon we will deal with a truly challenging question: "Why didn't the New Testament authors confront slavery directly? There will be many surprises as we consider how slavery worked in the first century. Also, we will find many direct applications for our roles as parents, children (including adult children), employees and bosses.

It's an important debate concerning whether a husbands and wives have different roles and responsibilities or whether they are to submit to one another mutually. A lack of understanding and embracing of the biblical view of marriage is largely to blame for the collapse of marriage in our generation.

In our text Paul continues to describe the character and behavior of the Christian as a walk. In this sermon Paul takes a deep dive into two key topics, wisdom and the filling of the Holy Spirit. He also deals with the characteristics of the spirit-filled Christian and contrasts that with the characteristics of the fool.
Eph. 5.1-14_Imitators of God
The loftiest of all exhortations is found in the opening verse of Ephesians 5: Be imitators of God. This text compares the new life of the Christian to being saints who walk in Christ's light rather than those whose purpose is committing deeds of darkness. When we, as Christians commit "deeds of darkness" we are failing to live into our high calling and God-given identity. A Christian who is defined by immorality and filthy speech is deceiving themselves and likely not a believer at all. Our world has gotten very dark, especially in recent weeks. It is more important than ever that we would be saints of God, who walk in the light of Christ and share his light with others.
