Dalal Street investors cheered the second anniversary of the Narendra Modi government
on Thursday with a 1.9% rally (486 points) to 26,367, its highest close in 2016. Backed by
strong buying in capital goods and banking stocks, nifty too rallied 1.7% to close above the
8,000 mark for the first time in about six months. A better-than-expected results from the
Indian companies during the quarter ended March and forecast of above-normal monsoon
this year on the back of a two consecutive years of less-than normal monsoons, helped lift
investor sentiment, brokers and dealers said.
The day's rally added Rs 1.2 lakh crore to investors' we alth with BSE's market capitalisation
now at Rs 97.8 lakh crore. The day's gains were helped by a Rs 581-crore net buying by FIIs
while domestic funds net bought stocks worth Rs 685 crore, BSE data showed. After two
consecutive sessions of strong gains that added over 1,000 points to sensex, market players
expect a small correction on Friday .
Engineering to constructions major L&T, which announced a 19% rise in net profit to Rs
2,456 crore, rallied over 14% to close at Rs 1,473. Other top gainers included SBI, up 4.9%
and BHEL, up 4.7%. Of the 30 sensex stocks, seven closed with marginal losses.
