This document provides an overview of the musical The Phantom of the Opera. It begins with reviewing vocabulary related to musical theater like plot, character, melody, motif, duet, and solo. It then summarizes the basic plot of the musical, which is about a disfigured phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House and falls in love with a young soprano. 9. We don’t have time to watch the whole thing
So
Here’s the plot
CRAZY SOPRANO, get’s hurt
Chorus girl sings her part
SHES FABULOUS
ZOMG SHE MEETS BOY FROM HER PAST
OMG THERES A GUY WHOS TEACHING HER MUSIC FROM HER MIRROR
They both love her and trouble ensues.
She ultimately needs to decide safety or music
She picks safety. Womp womp.
Oh and the Phantom murders like… three people to prove he loves her. And then POOF
Vanishes.
BASIC PLOT… SORRY GUYS

This song is called ANGEL OF MUSIC. This happens right after she
understudy’s for the leading soprano. The performance was a huge success
and her friend (blonde) is a chorus girl who finds her after the performance.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT…. We’ll talk later
What does this music remind you of?
How does this music sound?
Is this music happy, sad, can’t tell, can’t decide?
How does this song progress the plot?
LET’S LISTEN TO A FEW SONGS,
11. We need to watch this whole scene, I’m sorry I know it’s long but… it’s
important.
WHERE HAVE YOU HEARD THESE MELODIES BEFORE??
(if netflix isn’t working, we will use the youtube link to the 2004 movie..
Yeah I know, his voice isn’t great)
Listen to these lyrics, how do they relate to Angel of Music?
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
SCENE
12. As you can see, this show is packed FULL of duets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy1lWiHHHFY
(UGH plot plot plot)
So basically,
The soprano comes back,
The phantoms like
Don’t do that, star christine, or the show WILL be a disaster
And the Crazy Soprano is like, no, I’m gunna do it anyways
Welp, she mysteriously loses her voice,
And then he murders the main crew guy and hangs him Onstage during the ballet.
Christine runs to the roof (that puzzles me to this day) and mr. ‘Safety-guy-from-the-past is
like… there’s no phantom you are fine, even though some man just got murdered.
Okay so there’s some plot holes.
ALL I ASK OF YOU
13. We are getting through it… hang in there
Okay there’s no reason for this song to be in here I just absolutely love this
show and this is one of my favorite songs.... And there’s a cool reference at
the end.

What does that MOTIF MEAN!?!?!
It’s at the end!
For those singers in the room... His mix is LITERALLY insane.
POINT OF NO RETURN
14. Okay so.
That last scene, was after a series of attempts in catching the phantom. After a
series of events, they plan to put on the Phantom’s Opera “Don Juan” a story
of a seducer. The Crazy Soprano’s husband is supposed to be playing Don
Juan, (that’s why if we are watching the live version, the phantom puts on an
accent). The crew at the Opera house knew Phantom would show, but not
onstage.
Oh and Phantom kils the Soprano’s husband. Oops.
UGH I HATE PLOT DETAILS
15. I’ll just let this one sit and brew, there’s so many good things happening
here….
Just, just enjoy.

Other motifs that can be heard
-music of the night
-wandering child..?
-some background vocals of other songs.
THE FINAL SEQUENCE
16. PROJECTS BRING THEM IN
Remember, present, show a song, explain how it affects the plot- character,
scene development, and how do the lyrics affect the scene.
Do they have a double meaning?
Just do what we have been doing in class!
