Everest Base Camp For Theatre Nemo - summary with photos
1. Everest Base Camp for Theatre NEMO
After 20 days, over 220km
of scenic routes and 10,000m
of altitude my epic trek in
the Everest region has come
to an end. I had a fabulous
time there with amazing
hospitality from the local
Sherpa population and breath-
taking views. I have seen four
of the world’s highest summits
such as Everest, Nuptse, Cho
You and Makalu.

I am not going to lie to you – it was tough as my body was trying to adapt to life at high altitude. Falling
asleep in a room with temperature below minus 5oC and getting up at 4.30am was not pleasant but having tea
brought to me in the morning by the Sherpas helped. Ascent of between 500m and 1,000m every day was a
big challenge too but my fitness level has never been as good as now.

The trip made me appreciate the smaller things in life:
- Fruit and veg was limited in the mountains and the main
source of protein was from eggs;
- Tap water was not safe for the delicate western
traveller’s stomach, so chloride tablets were used freely;
- Hot showers – most lodges had very basic shower facilities with
luke warm water and temperature in the bathroom on the fresh side;
- Bread and diary products – only deep fried Tibetan bread was
available (which I really enjoyed, must be down to living in Scotland
too long), powder milk and smelly yak cheese;
- Greens of Scotland – above 3,500m, where we stayed for
most of the trek, there were no trees, bushes or even
grass, just rocks and ice.

Despite all the hard times, my experience was truly unforgettable.
I am going to miss the deep blue colour of the Himalaya sky
and the turquoise water of the lakes in the Khumbu valley.
I am also going to miss three lovely meals cooked for me
every day and games evenings with the rest of my trekking
team gathered around stoves which were fuelled by dried yak
dung.
The image of the Everest Base Camp, frozen city of hundreds of tents
attached to the Khumbu glacier beaten by merciless blizzards, will always
stay in my mind as one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
