What is retail?
The basic explanation for retail is the sale of goods to the public for use or
consumption rather than for resale. It involves the sale of goods from a single
point (store, market) directly to the consumer in small quantities for their end
use. Retailing is transaction of goods between the seller and the client as a
single unit or in small quantities. The retailer usually purchases goods in bulk
quantities to be sold to the customer either directly from the manufacturers or
through a wholesaler. Retail also includes service provided say like
laundromats, mobile repair, salons, etc
How big is retail In India?
Retail Industry in India is one of the pillars of its economy and accounts for 14-
15 percent of its GDP. The Indian retail market is estimated to be US$ 450
billion and one of the top five retail markets in the world by economic value.
India is one of the fastest growing retail markets in the world, with 1.2 billion
people.
Is my store a part of Retail?
We can classify retailers in the following categories:
 Food, Grocery, Supermarkets, Pharmacy, Chemist, Kirana stores
 Restaurants and Multiplexes
 Lifestyle products (Includes clothing, accessories, jewellery, consumer

Retail sector employs 33 million (3.3 crores) people today, making it the
second largest employer in India. The number is expected to grow to 50
million (5 crores).
What is Retail Employees’ Day?
To celebrate the services of the retail employees and create the pride of
belonging to the retail community Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of
India (TRRAIN) initiated the idea that would recognize their efforts through
public appreciation by dedicating a day to them, “Retail Employees’ Day”.

Is Retail Employees’ Day only meant for front end
store personnel?
No, Retail Employees’ Day is to celebrate every employee in retail whether in
the front end or at the back end.
Is this the first edition of Retail Employees’ Day?
No, this is the third edition of Retail Employees’ Day; the first edition was first
celebrated in 2011.
Who all participated in Retail Employees’ Day in the
last two years?
In the past two editions, 151 organizations from all across the country have
come together to share the sense of gratitude they feel being for their
employees by celebrating the Retail Employees’ Day. Organizations that
participated in RED: Mahindra Retail, Aditya Birla Retail Ltd., Cafe Coffee Day
and D’ Decor to name a few.

How can my store participate? Is there a charge for it?
It is easy and charge free to participate in the Retail Employees’ Day. Even
though we have added a list of suggestions from our end, we recommend you
to celebrate it the way you would like to show your appreciation for your
associates.

retail employees. By celebrating Retail Employees’ Day, the organization is
accepting the role, importance and contribution of the employee. Like we
celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Christmas wherein we
celebrate an individual or a religion and acknowledge the role of the person in
our lives. Similarly Retail Employees’ Day is to celebrate the employee in
retail.
So 12th December this year, we encourage you to join us in this endeavour.
Bring smiles to faces of the employees who help us all in making the retail
industry prosper.
Why should companies who are not retailers but are
service providers to retail business celebrate? What is
in it for them?
Like we send Diwali greetings en masse to all retail employees in organization,
sometimes known by name but many times known by role. Similarly by
wishing retail employee on the retail employees’ day the service provider is
acknowledging the role played by the employee.
I am a consumer; can I participate in Retail Employees’
Day too?
Yes! Retail Employees’ Day is a day dedicated to the employees of retail and the
celebrations cannot be complete without the involvement of the consumers.
The retail associates act as fashion consultants to help you chose garments,
comparators who can accurately describe technical specifications of competing
brands of consumer durables and life-savers when they deliver that one strip
of a pain-killer, one loaf of bread or that one bottle of cola at 11 pm at night
without complaint.
The retail associates look forward to serving you and a nice gesture from your
end will definitely make their day. So since the last two years, we have
encouraged the consumers to say “Thank you” to the retail associates on the
Retail Employees’ Day.

Employees Day?
Today retail is the largest contributor of revenue to most of the media

Currently, Retail Employees’ Day is a National level event, hopefully one day it
