Looking back at your preliminary task, what
1. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
2. • Looking back at my preliminary task, I have learnt a lot more
about varying shots, editing, composing frames and generally
using new technologies.
• Firstly with editing, I have learnt how to use new technologies
such as iMovie which was new to me. I developed new skills
on how to use precision editing to make the scenes more
concise. When creating the film opening I was able to further
develop these skills and create titles and integrating images of
our funders and production company to establish the genre as
well as using transition editing and editing sound.
3. • From the preliminary task, I also have learnt more about
varying shots and how there needs to be a variety of shots to
keep the audience engaged. In the prelim my group and I had
to demonstrate use of the 180 degree rule which helped me
understand more about varying shots as we couldn't cross the
line. This helped in my film opening where the varying shots
were more important as there was no dialogue in the opening
and we had to keep our audience engaged. To influence our
film opening, my group and I watched the film openings of
Deja Vu and North by Northwest to develop our ideas on
varying shots and the panning shots in North by
Northwest helped my group and I to incorporate camera
movement into our film, and at one point in the chase scene
the camera is handheld to engage the audience in the film
and make them feel that they are a part of that scene.
4. • From learning the 180 degree in the preliminary task, it
helped me to understand how to compose the frame and
what needs to be inside it. I also learnt the importance of
location and setting and how characters were positioned in it.
For example in our prelim we had to fit two characters in a
toilet cubicle to create a sense of tension and allow focus on
the two characters and the close distance between them
showed a close relationship. I developed this idea in my film
opening as the female protagonist appeared small in large
background to make her appear more vulnerable.
5. • The preliminary task could have been improved by making clear
choices about mise-en-scene and what exactly should be in the
scene. However we improved this when it got out film opening.
Furthermore we didn't yet understand the importance of
characters and costume to relate to audiences and stereotypes.
Whilst filming our preliminary task we also didn't have a clear
target audience in mind but we later understood the importance
of the target audience when we filmed our opening and how to
attract the audience and keep them engaged in the film which is
the most important factor.
• Throughout the process of creating a preliminary task and film
opening I have learnt that organisation is key to create a perfect
product. A clear narrative, genre, target audience, soundtrack,
shooting schedule, funder, distributor etc... needs to be thought
out to create a final piece. Furthermore this will only work out
with focus, concentration and motivation from team members.
