    • Saddle should be high enough to fully extend leg, but not so high that the leg locks
      • Your knee should not be bent at the bottom of the stroke!
      • 8. If the saddle can't go that high, the bike is too small!
    • Once you get the saddle height right, the bike should have a comfortable reach
      • Can be adjusted somewhat

  • 10. Is the bike in good shape?
  • 11. Things to look out for
    • Bearings in good order
    • 12. Wheels true
    • 13. Brakes well adjusted
    • 14. Gears work
    • 15. Frame not damaged
  • 16.
    • Should spin freely around intended axis
    • 17. Should wobble in third axis!
    • 18. Should not be “crunchy”
  • 19.
    • Spin the wheel
    • 20. Squeeze the spokes to check their tension
  • 21.
    • Brakes should not “bottom out”
    • 22. Brakes should not feel “mushy”
    • 23. Pads should be aligned with rim, and centered
  • 24.
    • Derailleur should be aligned with chain
    • 25. Gears should shift
    • 26. Chain/cables should not be rusty
  • 27.
    • Look for dings. Minor ones are OK.
    • 28. If the frame is straight, you should be able to ride the bike in a straight line with no hands
  • 29. Is it a good bike?
  • 30. Sometimes its not...
    • Things to NEVER NEVER buy (with exceptions)
      • X-mart bikes (Huffy, Roadmaster, “GMC”, Magna, etc)
      • 31. Steel wheels
      • 32. “Suicide levers”
      • 33. Once-piece cranks

    • Steel wheels: heavy, bendy, don't work well in the rain
    • 36. Magnet test, shine test

    • Pump with a gauge

    • Cable locks are easy to cut
    • 42. U locks can be cut also, just harder
