Kardjali
If you open any tourist guide of Europe or the world you coil no doubt also come across a few
lines about Bulgaria: "A country in southeastern Europe, in the Balkan Peninsula, extending over
an attractive tourist country, with beautiful scenery and a hospitable people.”
There are the generally known facts. Yet every country has something that is typical, different
and unique! This is what you might no know about Bulgaria:
- The birth date of Bulgaria is the year 681.There were only three states in Europe at that time:
the Western Roman Empire, The Eastern Roman impair (Byzantium) and Bulgaria!
- The oldest crafted gold in the history of mankind as well as the Thracian gold treasures which
conquered the world, were discovered in the Bulgarian lands!
- Of the 300 cultural and natural sites in the UNESCO list of the World Heritage, nine are in
Bulgaria.
- The Bulgarian attar of roses.
- Small Bulgaria is one of the world’s largest wine producers.
- The land of the mythical singer Orphans has produced some of the most out standing voices of
world operatic art.
Kardjali is a town in South part of Bulgaria . It is settled in one of the biggest mountain chains
in one Bulgaria called Rhodopes. A big Arda river is running across the town. In our region we
have several doms, and one of them is the longest one in the whole Balkan peninsula Near the
town there is a small ecological resort which is high in the mountain with fresh air, pine and
birch trees.
Around Kardiali there are several healing springs People from Bulgaria and Europe visit
sanatoriums to cure them selves.
In our, region we have a lot of ruins are unveiled surrounding, are a Kardjali. They are dated
from 3-th century , belong to tribe ,,poesy”. Also there are sacrificial altars, sanctuaries, Roman

in Sanatorien kuren.

17
Baptism
Description
18
19. Still in the stag of earliest childhood, babies of an age around two or three months get baptized in
our home. A baptism of older people, for example when children, teenagers or adults get newly
recepted, is a rather scarce thing
Baptism ceremonies normally take place in a small familiar setting. Parents, brothers and sisters,
the godfathers and the grandparents come to the church. Sometimes also the friends of the family
come to the church.
Another very popular thing are Baptism ceremonies during Easter night that are celebrated
together with the whole parish. The child to be baptized is brought to the font by the godfather
on a white christening pillar, wearing a white christening robe. The christening candle is carried
by a child. This candle is lighted at the Easter candle before the ritual starts.
The baptism itself is effected with the following words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Ghost.” While speaking these words, the child’s forehead is poured over
with christening water; afterwards a cross is made with chrism.
In addition to the parents the godfather promises to take care of the religious education of the
child.
After the baptism the family meets the guests and the priest; normally the celebration takes place
at a restaurant or at home. The child to be baptized gets multiple gifts of money but toys and
clothes are also popular presents.
Even those parents, which are quite critical to the church, want to have a baptism. It is often
criticized that in some families the secular celebration is taken too seriously, whereas people
forget the real meaning of baptism.
Effect
The baptism makes the young Christian a member of the parish. This is best expressed by the
fact that quite often the baptism is part of Easter Night’s liturgy.
The second effect is the young Christian’s liberation from the inherited debt. The christening is
certified by the parish by issuing a certificate of baptism.
Reason
According to the church the reason can be found in Mt 28,18-20
“Then Jesus came to them and said: I am given power in heaven and on earth. Therefore go to all
nations and let all people become my disciples;
baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, and teach them to obey what
I taught you! Be sure: I am with you everyday until the end of the world!”

Buße
Beschreibung
Schuldbekenntnis. Wir sind angehalten, auf jeden Fall die schweren Sünden zu bekennen;
Beichte einen Vorsatz, was man in Zukunft besser machen will.
verweigert.“ (Joh 20,22-23)
Penance
What it is
Although there are several ways of having sins forgiven in our denomination (e.g. penance
prayers, confession during services), penance in the narrow sense means a conversation between
a believer and a priest in the so called confessional or in a special room.
The first time young catholic Christians confess is before receiving their first holy Communion,
which usually takes place in form three at an age of nine to ten years. They are prepared for this
first confession by a priest during their religious education lessons at school. Inside the
confessional the believer is separated from the priest by a wooden wall. They only speak to each
other through a small window in this wall.
The confession contains the following important pieces of information:
reference to age, marital status and the date of the last confession. The most important part of the
procedure is the confession of the sins. Serious sins should always be confessed whereas less
severe lapses can be included in the declaration of sins. After this declaration the priest has a
conversation with the penitent and tells him from his sins. Usually the pennant makes up his
mind in which way to act better in the future.
The willingness to go to confession is continuously decreasing in our denomination, especially
among the youth. The percentage of those regularly going to confession may be estimated at
about 15-30 % depending on how well a parish works.
What it does
By confessing we are relieved form our guilt by the absolution of a priest if some important
requirements are met (confession, willingness to do better, reparation, repentance, penance)
The priest speaks: “I resolve you from your sins. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Ghost.”
Why it’s done
The sacred mentality of penance is based on the following text: “On Easter evening Jesus, the
Lord appeared to his apostles and spoke to them: Receive the Holy Ghost! Those you forgive
their sins will be forgiven, those you refuse forgiveness are denied forgiveness.” (Joh 20,22-23)
Eucharistie (Erstkommunion)
Beschreibung

24. The Sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion)
Description:
After baptism and penance the Holy Communion is the third sacrament, which children get.
Usually the children are about nine or ten years old and they attend the third class. The children
are looking forward to this wonderful day because they are the focus of interest. Girls wear a
ceremonious white dress and boys wear a new suit in most of the rectories. In some places an
uniform dress has prevailed against the absolute dominance of the latest fashion as feast garment.
All children wear a Communion candle, which they have sometimes made themselves.
The children renew the baptism promise once more during the service. Then they are allowed to
meet God in the form of bread for the first time in their life.
This Holy Communion is celebrated with an extravagant family celebration. Often there are
between 20-70 guests. Big presents are given.
Effect:
Jesus Christ units with man during the Holy Communion. Therefore the church demands that
everybody, who receives the Holy Communion, has no grave sins.
Argument:
The argument of the sacrament is based on the stories about the Last Supper, which can be found
in the New Testament (Mk. 14,17-25; Lk. 22,14-20; 1. Kor. 11,23-26). We know from Justin that
we take our place in the long chain of tradition. An adequate age or an adequate maturity is
required because the children, who get the Holy Communion, should be able to distinguish the
body of Jesus Christ from ordinary bread (1. Kor. 11,27-29).

Firmung
Beschreibung
Schule in sog.
dass sie den Heiligen Geist empfingen. Denn er war noch auf keinen von ihnen herabge-kommen;
Heiligen Geist.“ (Apg 8,14-17)
Ιστ. 8, 14-17)

The Sacrament of Confirmation
Description:
The confirmation (Latin: “firmare” = to strengthen) is usually granted in the age between 11 and
13. After an appropriate preparation in school or in so-called confirmation groups which aren’t
related to school, the juveniles make an application to the appropriate priest that they wish to
receive the sacrament.. The juveniles who want to be confirmed get a day off school. On this
very day they are accompanied to church by one of their godparents and their family members.
In the church the priest and the bishop wait for them who grant the Sacrament of Confirmation in
a ceremonial, eucharistic service.
The course of events of the Ritual of Confirmation looks like this:
28
29. The young juvenile who wants to be confirmed walks with his or her godparents up to the priest
and kneels while one godparent rests his or her hand on the shoulder of the godchild. The right
hand of the bishop rests on the head of the child; with the thumb, which is covered with Chrisam
(holy oil), the bishop makes the sign of the cross and pronounces the following words:
“Be sealed with the gift of God, the Holy Ghost!”
The Bishop usually directs some personal words to the young Christian, if there’s enough time; it
is possible that about 100 young people can participate in this ritual.
After the celebration in church there is a private celebration at home or in a restaurant; the young
juveniles who are confirmed are usually given rich presents by their grandparents.
The effect:
1. After the Christening, Confirmation is the second step of the admission of the young
Christian to the Fellowship of Believers. At the christening the parents have decided for
their child. Now the young person decides alone.
2. The Bishop requests the power and the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost for the young Christian,
to strengthen him (= “firmare”) for the rest of his life in faith.
Reason:
The Catholic Church substantiates the necessity of the Confirmation with reference to the story
of the Apostles: “As the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria has accepted the Word of
God, they sent Peter and John to them. They travelled to them and prayed for them, that they
would receive the holy ghost. Because none of them was enlightened by Him; they were only
baptized (…) Now Peter and John laid their hand on them and they received the Holy Ghost.”
Ehe
Beschreibung
Marriage
Description
As in all cultures the marriage is in our home country a big celebration for all relatives, friends
and acquaintances. 40 to 50 years ago 50 to 60 guests were invited to the celebration but
nowadays 150 guests aren’t seldom anymore.
Our marriage law requires an obligatory marriage contract due to the registry office to
acknowledge a conjugal community. Those couples not willing to marry in front of a priest use
the registry office marriage to celebrate with their guests. But still many couples, especially in
rural areas celebrate the ecclesiastical marriage. A favourite date to marry is Saturday afternoon.
Usually the bride wears a white wedding-dress with a long veil, which is carried by the bride
maids. The bride and groom are accompanied by more kids that carry the candle and the
marriage bands which are sewed to a little pillow.
Two witnesses to a marriage are necessary, too. These job is often done by the fathers of the
couple. The solemn promise of marriage is part of the mass in the church according to the
gospel. The priest asks the couple in front of all guests:
- if they start their marriage voluntarily
- if they are ready for the Christian marriage (e.g. indissolubility) and
- if they are willing to accept children and to bring them up according to the Christian spirit.
The couple exchanges the wedding band after the promise of marriage. The priest puts the stole
around the hands that the couple joins, gives the blessing and addresses the guests as witnesses
of the promise of marriage.
After the ecclesiastical marriage a very big, lavish celebration including a good meal, drinking
an dancing takes place. A lot of wedding customs are common practice.
31
32. For example is the bride taken to another restaurant during the celebration. After a while the
groom picks her up there with the band and all guests.
Idea
The priest accepts in behalf of the church the couples’ willingness to marry and gives the
church’s blessing. The public nature of the yes-saying to witnesses saves the promise. The
symbol of the stole, which is wrapped around the hands, the exchange of the wedding bands
refers to the duration of the marriage, to the indissolubility.
Reason
The catholic church considers the marriage as a sacrament, which can only be given once. It can
only be dissolved when one partner dies or when the marriage is announced invalid. This can
come true when the marriage was invalid at the moment of the promise of marriage, for example
when the marriage wasn’t voluntary.
According to Eph 5,25-32 the marriage is a sacrament: Paulus says: “Men, love your wives as
Christ has loved the church… This is a mysterious cult, I apply this to Christ and the church.”
Priesterweihe
Beschreibung
manchmal sogar in Pferdekutschen in ihren Heimatort ein. Kinder begrüßen sie mit Gedichten;
Neupriester. Blumenteppiche schmücken die Straßen, Musikkapellen begleiten den Festzug;

Holy Orders
Description
At the 29th of June, the feast of Peter and Paul, there is the ordination in the cathedral of the
bishopric For the members of the family and the home parish, from where the young priest is, it
is a great festival. The candidates for becoming a priest, who are already consecrated deacons,
are announced and introduced by the bishop; After the speech of the bishop there is the All
Saints litany. An important rite is the oiling of the new priest with chrism and the presentations
of the patina and the goblet.
The most important part of the rite is the laying on of hands by the bishop. Afterwards all the
other already consecrated priests, which are in the cathedral, lay their hands on the young priest
too. Priests practice celibacy in our church, that means that they renounce to marry and to have a
family. This demand is not undisputed, especially in our times.
The new consecrated priests are welcomed in their home place with great honours. Sometimes
they come home in a horse cab. The children learn poems for them; the officials of societies and
the parish are there.
The first mass of a young priest is also called “Primiz-Gottesdienst” (“primus – lat. the first”);
therefore the new priest is also called “Primiziant”. Many friends and fellows (1000 people
aren’t seldom) celebrate this mass with the new priest. Carpets of flowers are on the street, bands
go along with the procession; Preacher pay tribute to the extra-ordinary of the day, members of
the parish and the church are there.
After the mass there is a great party, wherefore in some parishes are tents to host all the guests. It
is a custom here to bring the young priest – similar to a wedding – many presents and donations.
A very special blessing is the “Primiz-Segen”, which is given by the young priest. Some of the
believers say that you should wish something; this wish will be fulfilled.
Effect
The deacon gets full powers for his office with the ordination. He now can spend all sacraments
– only exception is the ordination – and most of all, he is allowed to spend the holy Eucharist.
The most important rite within the transmission of full powers is the laying on of hands by the
bishop.
34
35. Reason
Before the holy Paul of Ephesus left, he appointed Timotheus as first in his parish. During a
meeting of the whole parish, he fulfilled the lay on of hands while saying prayers. Later on, he
wrote him: “I admonish you that you re-awake the grace given to you by God, which is in you
since my laying on of hands.” (2 Tim 1,6)
The apostles also have the power, which they were given by Jesus Christ, to pass forward these
powers by laying hands on and by prayers.

Krankensalbung
Beschreibung
Unction
Description
Years ago this sacrament was called „the last unction“ here. From time to time, this term caused
consternation and was connected with fear of approaching death. This was one reason why the
term “anointing of the sick” was chosen according to the sacrament.
In the vernacular this sacrament is also paraphrased by the term “to administer the last rites to
someone” or even shorter “to provide someone”: For this purpose, every Christian family is in
possession of the so called “providing means”. It consists of a cross, two candles and of a bowl
with holy water. The sacrament of anointing of the sick can also be received more often. For this
purpose, the priest is called by the relatives to the sick-bed at home or also to the hospital. If the
circumstances allow it, first of all, the sick receives the sacrament of penance. While
administring the anointing of the sick, the priest lays his hands on the sick and prays for him.
Afterwards, the forehead and the hands are anointed with sick-oil that has been consecrated by
the bishop.
In the course of this the priest is praying “Through this holy anointing the Lord shall help you in
his rich mercy”. At this ritual, only the closest relatives are present.
Effect
The grace of anointing of the sick should be an encouragement, should be strength to find the
consolation of the Church in this serious illness. This support through the power of the Holy
37
38. Ghost should lead the sick to the healing of his soul, but also to the healing of his body if it is the
will of God. “And if he has committed sins, they will forgive him.” (Jac 5,15)
Justification
Our Church deduces the grounds for this sacrament from the following origin:
First of all, a hint is found at Mk 5,13 “The disciples casted out a lot of demons and anointed a
lot of sick with oil and healed them.” On the other hand, our Church refers to Jac 5,14-15 “Is one
of you ill? Then he has to call the prebyts of the Church to him; they shall speak prayers about
him and anoint him in the name of the Lord with oil. The devout prayer will save the sick and the
Lord will help him up; if he has forgiven sins, they will forgive him.”

aineen muodossa. Evankelis-luterilainen kirkko hyväksyy sakramenteiksi vain kasteen ja
ehtoollisen, koska niiden viettoon liittyy selvä Kristuksen käsky.
The Sacraments
The Sacraments are visible signs of grace. Christ Himself has instituted them and is present in
visible matter. The Evangelical Lutheran Church regards only Baptism and the Lord's Supper as
sacraments because their observance is grounded on Christ's express commandment.
Taufe
Beschreibung
40
41. Kaste
Käytäntö
Kaste suoritetaan joko kirkossa tai kotona. Kirkossa pidettävässä toimituksessa on enemmän
liturgisia osia ja musiikkia. Lapsi puetaan valkoiseen kastepukuun.
Merkitys
Myös lapsi tarvitsee syntien anteeksiannon, sillä hänkin on perisynnin alainen. Pyhän Hengen
kautta vastasyntynyt liitetään kristilliseen kirkkoon.
Perustelu
Kaste perustuu Jeesuksen kaste- ja lähetyskäskyyn ( Matt.28:18-20 ); kirkko seuraa
alkuseurakunnan esimerkkiä ( Gal.3:26-27 ).
Baptism
Description
Baptism is administered either in the church or at home. A ceremony performed in the church
includes more liturgical parts and music. The child is dressed in a white baptismal gown.
Flowers, a burning candle, a Bible and a baptismal font made of glass, often passed down in the
family, are placed on the baptismal table.
At least two of the godparents must be members of a Lutheran church.
After the creed, which is said together, the minister baptizes the child in the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit, infusing the child's head three times. Thereafter the minister,
together with the members of the family and the godparents, blesses the child by the laying on of
hands and the sign of the cross. The minister lights a big baptismal candle with the candle on the
altar or on the baptismal table and hands it to the parents or the godparents. This baptismal
candle, as a symbol for the flame of the Holy Spirit, reminds of Christian upbringing and is lit on
the child's every birthday.
Significance
Also a child needs the forgiveness of the sins, because he, too, is corrupted by original sin.
Through the Holy Spirit the infant is joined to the Christian church.
Scriptural basis
Baptism is based on the Great Commission of Jesus (Matt.28:18-20). The church follows the
example of the early church (Gal.3:26-27).

42. Kindertaufe durch Begießung - Lapsikaste valelemalla - Infant baptism by infusion
Abendmahl
Beschreibung
42
43. Pyhä Ehtoollinen
Käytäntö
Evankelis-luterilainen messu päättyy ehtoolliseen. Se alkaa vuorolaululla papin ja seurakunnan
välillä. Hymnin ”Pyhä” (Sanctus) jälkeen pappi lausuu ehtoollisen asetussanat. Yhteisesti
lausuttua Isä meidän -rukousta seuraa hymni ”Jumalan Karitsa” (Agnus Dei) . Sen jälkeen
ehtoolliseen osallistuvat menevät kirkon kuoriin ja polvistuvat alttarikaiteen eteen. Pappi jakaa
kohottamattoman ehtoollisleivän (hostia) ja sanoo: ”Jeesuksen Kristuksen ruumis, sinun edestäsi
annettu”.
Holy Communion
Description
The Evangelical Lutheran service concludes with communion. The communion service begins
with a responsory between the minister and the congregation. After the hymn Sanctus the
minister says the words of institution. After the Lord´s prayer, which the congregation and the
minister say together, the hymn Agnus Dei is sung. Thereafter the communicants go to the choir
and kneel in front the communion rail. The minister distributes the unleavened bread (the host)
and says, “The body of Jesus Christ, given for you.” Then he distributes the wine and says, “The
blood of Jesus Christ, shed for you.” The communion service closes with a thanksgiving prayer.
Significance
Christ is present in the consecrated bread and wine. Those who partake of communion are
acquitted of their sins by faith owing to the sacrificial death of Christ Communion unites people
to Christ, to other members of the congregation and to all deceased holy people.
Scriptural basis
1 Corinthians 11:23-25: “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you,
That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: and when he had given
thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in
remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying,
This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of
me.”
43
44. „Für euch gegeben“ - „Teidän edestänne annettu“ - „Given for you“
Beichte
Beschreibung
Heistä jokaisella on ehdoton vaitiolovel-vollisuus.
Synnintunnustusta seuraa
synninpäästö. Kumpikin lausutaan joko omin tai kirkkokäsikirjan sanoin.
Hyvin usein ripittäytyminen tapahtuu sairaalasielunhoidon yhteydessä. Ripin jälkeen potilas voi
nauttia myös Pyhän ehtoollisen. Jos tilaisuus toimitetaan kirkkokäsikirjan mukaan, siihen liittyy
myös virsi, rukouksia ja Herran siunaus. Pappi on pukeutuneena albaan ja stolaan, ja pöydällä on
valkoisen liinan päällä risti, sytytetty kynttilä sekä ehtoollisvälineet.
Merkitys
Ripissä ihminen saa henkilökohtaisen syntien anteeksiantamuksen vakuuden. Anteeksiannon
Perustelu
Joh. 20: 21- 23 : Niin Jeesus sanoi heille jälleen: ” Rauha teille!
heille: ”Ottakaa Pyhä Henki. Joiden synnit te anteeksi annatte, niille ne ovat anteeksi annetut;
Confession
Description
There are both a general, public confession and a private confession in the Evangelical Lutheran
Church. A general confession is made in every church. A minister, a deaconess, a deacon or any
member of the congregation can receive confession in any undisturbed place. All of them are
bound to absolute secrecy.
Anyone with a disturbed conscience can seek guidance and advice. Confession is followed by
absolution; both may be said either in one’s own words or in those in the service book.
Confession is very often connected with pastoral care in hospital. After confession the patient
can also partake of Holy Communion. According to the service book also a hymn, prayers and
the Aaronic Benediction are included. The minister wears an alb and a stole and there is a cross,
a lighted candle and the Eucharistic bread and wine on a table covered with a white cloth.
Significance
In confession one receives personal assurance of the forgiveness of sins. The words of
forgiveness are reliable because they are God’s own words. Sins are wiped out because of
Christ’s sacrificial death.
Scriptural basis
John 20: 21-23 : “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me,
even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them,
Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose
soever sins ye retain, they are retained.”

Konfirmation
46
47. Beschreibung
Wer in mir
vollbringen.”
Konfirmaatio
Käytäntö
Seurakunta hoitaa lapsikasteeseen liittyvän opetusvelvoitteen pyhäkouluissa ja kerhoissa. Tämä
opetus huipentuu rippikouluun, joka tavallisimmin pidetään 8-10 päivää kestävänä leirinä.
Opetuksen lisäksi nuorille on tarjolla vapaa-ajan harrastustoimintaa kristillisen etiikan
sisäistämiseksi.
Rippikoulun päätyttyä järjestetään konfirmaatio-jumalanpalvelus. Siinä nuoret ovat

Nuorilta voidaan vielä kysellä kristinopin pääkohtia. Sen jälkeen konfirmoitavat tulevat alttarin
eteen ja lausuvat yhteen ääneen uskontunnustuksen. Tämän jälkeen pappi kysyy heiltä
”Tahdotteko Jumalan armon avulla osoittaa tämän uskon elämässänne?” ”Tahdon”-vastauksen
