With a successful 21 year history, 3
established dance teams, a choir group, and
nearly 100 active general body members,
the Philippine United Student Organization,
otherwise known as PUSO, strives to
provide an environment that cultivates and
celebrates Filipino history and culture. As one
of the largest and most influential cultural
organizations on Stony Brook University’s
campus, our mission is to create a social
environment in which Filipino culture is
“advocated, discussed and celebrated.” We
achieve this through hosting special events,
collaborations with campus clubs, weekly
general body meetings, dance performances,
and involvement with the greater community.

SAYAW is the largest dance competition
and showcase held at Stony Brook
University hosted by PUSO. Tagalog
for “dance”, SAYAW aims to share this
important aspect of Filipino culture not
only with the Stony Brook community, but
also with the New York/New Jersey area.
Since its inception in 2011, SAYAW grew
from a competition consisting of three local
teams to a competition and showcase
consisting of some of the most talented
teams from the NY/NJ area and even
Connecticut. With the help of three
renowned guest judges from the dance
community, we strive to create networking
opportunities, allow artists to express
themselves artisticallly, as well as transcend
ethnic barriers by experiencing this universal
art form.

“I started dancing back in 2007
freshman year of a High
School hip-hop club (Dance
Appreciation) then I fell
in love right away and
wanted to get more serious
and joined exhibition and
competitive Jr./Collegiate
teams (Underground, Common
Ground, Offspring, Breed) And
now being an alumni, I am more than ever hungry to be
a student again and also being able to be the teacher.”

all around the world since then,
teaching and sharing his unique
style of choreography at dance studios and events such
as mL, Dancescape, and Urban Paradise. Stony Brook’s
PUSO is excited to have him as a guest teacher/judge for
SAYAW 2015 and wish him a warm welcoming to the East

“My name is Chris Banaga and I’m
21 years old, currently finishing
up my last year at Santa Clara
University in the Bay Area
with a Bachelor’s degree in
Civil Engineering. I started
taking official dance classes
(hip-hop) in 2011 in San Diego
(my hometown), which means
I’ve been dancing for about 4
or 5 years, but I’ve always been into freestyling in my
garage and bedroom and learning things off of Youtube
in my spare time. This is currently my third year on The
Company, which was my first team as a dancer. My
style has been and will always be a developing process,
but I have always been heavily influenced by teachers
from both The Company and from the San Diego area,
mainly including Pat Cruz, Keone Madrid, Aggie Loyola,
and Vinh Nguyen. What I love most about dancing and
choreographing is that they are both learning processes
and no matter how far you go with either of them, there
is always something to learn and there are always areas
for growth. The end destination is always great but what
drives me to continue this passion is feeling a constant
desire to grow and be better each and every day.”

DejaVu Dance Troupe was founded
Fall 2003 by Shannyn Bethel.
The main focus of the dance
team was to perform hip
hop and reggae on the SBU
campus. Since then, DejaVu
has developed into a multi-
cutural team with diversified
methods of dance. The group is entirely student
choreographed so while we still focus on hip-hop
our spectrum of dancing encompasses all styles.

Defined Movement is Project
D Dance Company’s Junior
Division. Their mission is
“... To break through the
boundaries of soul, mind,
and body: defining the bridge
between music and movement.”

We are a dance team which hopes
to promote dance itself and how it
can benefit an individual to break
its shell, whether being socializing,
expressing themselves, owning
up to responsibilities, and of
course developing them as a
dancer. We love to see our members
transform from people with no dance
experience to one of our top dancers. Our members
have grown to great lengths, and have worked hard to
strengthen themselves thus allowing Unique Movement to
be at where it stands now. We hope to share our love for
dance someday to the world and do something good for
the community and inspire others.

For the past 10 years, this company
coming from Bergenfield, New
Jersey has been entertaining
audiences all around the
country. Competing in various
competitions and performances,
this team’s range of urban dance,
mixed with the fundamentals
of hip hop, cuts them from the
rest. You can also see this team give back to their
dance community when they put on their annual dance
competition “Defining Rhythm” in the Spring. Founded by
Will Barrientos and led by directors Jorge Aguas, Marnie
Mariano, and Nico Montemayor, this is Rhythmology.

‘Filiment,’ a combination of the words
“Filipino” and “Elements,” is a dance
troupe that was first formed in
2008 in the College of Mount
Saint Vincent. It was originally
just a branch of SAMAHAN,
the college’s Filipino organization.
However, interest in the group soon
sparked and grew over the years.
While the group seeks to entertain and perform, their
number one rule is plain and simple: have fun. Filiment
is the escape route for many students from the stress
of college by forming new bonds and friendships,
especially among peers of the Mount community. At
the same time, however, it also focuses on training
dancers with different styles of choreography. Filiment
holds no auditions; in fact, the group encourages many
dancers, both the new and the old, to come, learn and
participate in it’s many shows and workshops . Filiment is
all about the growth, training, fun and the friendships. It
also emphasizes not just on modesty, but on giving the
audience a good show and letting the world know the
happiness they experience and express as they dance.

The Varsity was formed back in 2010
as a small project to perform at
World Of Dance New York. The
team consisted of 7 members,
all of whom represented a
different team in the New
Jersey dance community. The
7 members would be looked as
“the varsity team” to represent
Jersey, similar to that of a high school sports team
representing a school. Since then, The Varsity has grown
into a community wide organization, keeping teams in
New Jersey unified and giving them a chance to share
the stage with each other to represent Jersey as one.
The Varsity
LACILEN’s main purpose is to blur the
lines of socially constructed gender
norms. By facilitating a marriage
of masculinity and femininity, the
rigid definition of the former is
then turned on it’s head.

Twas two days after Christmas,
when all through the house -
Errbody turnin’ up, even Rizzo,
the mouse? - Drinkin’ and
drankin’ all thru the night,
- In hopes to stay up, they
gave a good fight; - The shots
were lined up by the chimney
with care, - In hopes that their idol
would soon be there; - These frogs soon cuddled up
next to each other, - Anxious for Sayaw, which made
them shudder. - Just when they’ve settled down for
a quick nap, - Nature called, asking if they needed
to crap; - Then out by the bushes, they heard a big
rustle, - They woke up and waited, with hustle and
bustle. - The window flew open, followed with freezing
cold - Along came a lilypad, and eight tadpoles; - With
the jolly green driver, so thin and delicate, - They knew
in a moment, it was Kermit. - He smiled at the frogs,
wishing them luck - “Get out on stage! Have fun and
don’t give a ____!
