Students learn to represent ratios using ratio tables, equations, double number line diagrams, and plots on the coordinate plane. As an example, students are given information about a train trip from Yonkers, NY to Morgantown, WV and are asked to create a ratio table showing the time it will take to reach each destination along the way. They then graph the ordered pairs from the table on the coordinate plane. Using the graph, students determine that dinner will be served 5 hours into the trip when the train is 250 miles from Yonkers. Finally, students practice representing other ratios involving distance, time, or money in various formats including tables, diagrams, equations and graphs.
