Background Access and consumption of healthcare is quite limited in developing countries Unbalanced access to medicines 2 billion people – one-third of the global population – do not have regular access to essential medicines In some of the lowest-income countries in Africa and Asia, more than half of the population have no regular access to essential medicines In developing countries, 40 million people are estimated to be infected with HIV/AIDS, and life-saving antiretroviral medicines are available to only 300,000 of the 5-6 million people currently in need of treatment Unbalanced production and consumption of pharmaceuticals 15% of the world’s population consumes over 90% of the world’s production of pharmaceuticals (by value) Average per capita spending on pharmaceuticals in high-income countries is 100 times higher than in low-income countries – about US$ 400 compared with US$ 4 Only 1% of drugs have been approved for tropical diseases during 1975 to 1999 (16 out of 1,391 drugs) Reference: WHO Medicines Strategy 2004-2007

Example of Solution – Institute for One World Health Institute for OneWorld Health (iOWH) is a first non-profit pharmaceutical organization in the world Mission Develop drugs of infectious diseases which are fatal to people in developing countries Business model Obtain intellectual property of drugs from pharmaceutical / biotech companies which is buried in the companies (primarily because they are considered to be not profitable) Universities and pharmaceutical companies have already donated several IPs Employ top-level researchers or ask for volunteer based research and development Ask for donation to individuals and organizations for R&D cost Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have donated over US$ 70M to iOWH (by 2005) Develop partnerships with various stakeholders Not competitive with other pharmaceutical companies

Other Topics I am Interested in Design open innovation / IT platform Drug design involves large number of stakeholders and large variety of knowledge Efficiently connect among researchers and engineers may enable innovative breakthrough on drug discovery Example of such approach is InnoCentive (http://www.innocentive.com), a spin-out from Eli Lilly Companies submit issues on the website, with certain rewards proposed (e.g. US$10M for optimizing a chemical structure) – researchers conduct to tackle the issues and report back to get the rewards Build a business model to distribute technology to developing countries Artificial leg as an example Started communicating with ex-colleague (now Ph.D. student in MIT) to know more about his idea and technology
