This document summarizes the impact of tourism on the monks of Luang Prabang, Laos. It is based on interviews and surveys of monks and tourists. Tourism has increased cultural impacts and conflicts as the number of tourists has risen dramatically. The monks perceive both benefits like additional income and education opportunities, as well as negatives like theft and commercialization diminishing traditional lifestyle. Meanwhile, tourists are curious about Buddhism but also see unintended disrespect. There are challenges in balancing tourism development with preserving cultural spirit.
