The Powerpoint presentation I used for the INK TALK session during the Grand Finale of 'Accenture Innovation Jockeys 3' (Powered by Yahoo).
I was the Category Winner in 'Digital Government', among 1300 entries from about 400 colleges across India.
A few months back, I had the opportunity to visit a Common Services Centre in Kalchhina, one of the villages in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
That’s me in the photo, seated (right corner). The elderly man in the left corner with the really long beard is a retired village head.
I spoke with this small but representative audience who helped me understand the problems they face in their day to day life.
Among the many issues mentioned, the problems that stood out the most in my mind was the sale of their agricultural produce.
Most of the time, the farmers sell their agricultural goods to dealers at very low prices, lower than the government issued market prices. They are cheated often which directly affects their livelihood. And this is the issue I’ve focused on.

I bring you Gramseva: Kisan.
This app is designed for the farmer
Current Mandi Prices taken from the Government Website.
The app has several features that makes the task as simple as it can be. A few of them being:
AUTO SYNC. Every day, commodity price information is downloaded automatically when connected to the internet to the phone.
OFFLINE STORAGE. Once it’s downloaded via AutoSync, it can be accessed at any time without internet. Previous Days. Previous Months?
NEWS ALERTS. The user is informed about relevant agricultural news and information.
SHARE PRICE INFO. Easily share price information with their peers and co farmers using sms. There is strong community unity here. And if even one farmer is capable of utilizing this tool, he makes it a point to inform others.
--
It automatically downloads the daily mandi price information from the Open Government Data Platform and presents it to the farmer or wholesaler in a clear, convenient and concise manner.
It offers the following features:
•Auto Sync with data.gov.in : The farmer need not manually download the information. Everything is done by the phone, which downloads the latest information whenever internet is available.
•Local storage of data for historical view : The prices downloaded will be stored so that the farmer can check without network. If he does not have internet access at any one time, he can refer to the previous days data stored on the phone.
•Set Favorite Market/Commodities : The ability to choose specific market or specific commodity for filtered and relevant information. While other commodity information is stored only for one week at a time to optimize phone memory, those commodity market prices marked as favourite, are downloaded and stored indefinitely. My Phone currently has prices for Rubber in Thodhupura in Kerala for the last 8 months.
•Graphical visualization : Charts that easily show rise and fall of prices so they can make decisions crucial to their trade.
•Share price information to co-farmers : Farmers can easily share price information with their friends via SMS or other messaging options. Those who do not own smartphones can be passed the information by sms just easily. I noticed there is a sense of community unity in villages.
•Information dissemination through AdMob banners & GCM: To inform farmers about agriculturally related information.
These prices are COLOUR CODED and graphed so that the rise and fall of prices are very obvious.
I returned to Kalchhina with this app and asked them what they felt about it. The users found Gramseva: Kisan extremely useful.
Knowing the current Government notified prices of farm commodities made it much easier for them to bargain with dealers when selling.
The graphs help make crucial decisions like stocking their items rather than selling it at a lower price.
And it saved time. No more traveling far distances to get this information.
Price feeds was just one thing. I found that there is a need for a “structured information dissemination platform” to support the needs of the farmer during the entire life cycle of crop production
This requires integration of various instituitions and I believe I’ve made a good start with COMMODITY PRICE UPDATES!
I’d like my app to progressively include information relating to weather forecasts, weed control, pesticide control, soil testing, irrigation updates, etc.
Also, most importantly, I’d like to create “ Buyer connections” for agricultural commodities.
A platform for enabling them to directly selling and buying of agricultural produce without the middle man.
I hope to leverage the large network of CSCs (1 Lakh plus centres) across India to reach out to the farmer population and build a high impact platform. More like OLX, ebay etc. of farm produce.
This is my step to building a digital government.
Thank you. Feel free to download the app which is available on the Google Play Store.
And watch out for more features, soon !
