    Libraries can also announce:
    programs
    emergency or holiday closings
    Scheduled downtimes
The arrival of a long-awaited bestseller
Do a countdown to a big event like a Harry Potter party
Direct people to your website to check out something you want to highlight

It’s fun to come up with new ways to use Twitter.

Libraries can send out any kind of updates from Twitter, and feed them into their blogs.
Twitter works very well with other 2.0 types of tools.
You can even get an RSS feed of someone’s tweets (in fact that’s how this library did it—instead of calling them Twitter updates, they call them UGL Alerts).

Since you can receive Twitter updates on most mobile phones, libraries can send out updates to patrons.
Macintosh has made it really easy to use on an iPhone by offering an app that works right on your iPhone.
David can show you his, I bet!

Government organizations are Twittering. The Senate Floor is one of 143 U.S. government entities with Twitter accounts. So if you like to follow that kind of thing, you can get those updates on your phone or the Twitter delivery vehicle of your choice.
Also has become a vehicle for one of the presidential candidates.

News & weather updates are an intriguing use of Twitter.
This one is from something called the Science News Blog.
If residents are evacuated from their homes, they can receive Twitter updates on their phones.

Airports use it to alert travelers of delays. The problem with this is that not enough people are following the airports so they are definitely not getting the information out. People still don’t know about Twitter or it just sounds too weird so they don’t want to have anything to do with it.

    Besides individuals, organizations use it
L.A. Fire Department sends out a tweet to its 1000+ followers in Los Angeles.
See where it says *UPDATE, *TRAFFIC, etc? The one below the fold started with the word *EXPLOSION

Over a million people, organizations, and other entities are using Twitter on a regular basis.
According to an article in the blog TechCrunch, in April, there were over 200K active users per week.
Total messages over 3 million per day, from the sublime to the mundane (like this one from Todd)
