Good intentions versus good actions
1. Good Intentions versus Good Actions
You have heard the phrase, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” It is meant to
describe situations in which people meant to do something good and productive, but allowed
themselves to be sidetracked and led astray from the topic or situation at hand. Of course, it is not
very often that we think of distraction as an active choice, but it is one. When we allow our attention
to waver all of the time, instead of focusing upon that which makes us stronger, better, or upon that
which makes us more productive, then we are considered “ditzy” or “flighty” or some other
derogatory word.
Napoleon Hill, the great author of Think and Grow Rich, has described an ounce of action as being
worth a pound of intention. If we act upon our intention and actually follow through, then we create
a habit of success. If, however, we make our intention so unrealistically high that we are never able
to act upon it and succeed, then we are creating a habit of failure.
Hill advises his apprentices to make it easy to succeed, but to always act upon our intentions.
Now, at work, we have all been in the position where we “meant to get something done” but there
were so many other things which needed to get done, as well, that it was overlooked or delayed.
This is a good example of a boss getting mad at his secretary because she seemed to be too
incompetent to handle a simple task, when she was really focusing on a great number of other
simple tasks first.
When it comes to employee drug testing, an ounce of action really is worth a pound of intention.
