Pain FREE ISO, Lean and Six Sigma
1.
2. SALES TEAM: Our
customers want us to
be “ISO”
certified
by the end
of the year!
PRESIDENT:
I just met with the CEO of
XYZ Corporation, and a
team of Lean Six Sigma
Black Belts just saved
them $1 Million! I’m
going to hire a Black Belt
to work with you and
your department.
VP OPERATIONS:
I just walked through
the plant and it’s a
mess. I want you to
“5S” it by the end of
the month.
3. There’s no getting out of it. Your company
has decided to try yet another improvement
strategy to make the organization better,
faster and stronger.
And you’re thinking, “Well, I already
understood that to be the goal and have
spent every hour working toward it! I don’t
have TIME to waste with another program!”
Sound familiar?
6. Let’s start with compliance to an ISO
standard like ISO9001, ISO14001, TS16949
• If your business is successful, you’re already
doing most of it
• It is not hard and shouldn’t take a lot of time
• It should not add “busy work”
• It does not require excess documentation
• It cannot be done successfully by a coordinator
/ administrator by him/herself
• It DOES have EVERYTHING to do with your
daily activities in Operations
7. Next, let’s talk about Lean and Six Sigma
• They are similar but different (not the same)
• They should be an integral part of your ISO (or
quality management) system
• Lean is the study of waste reduction, which is
always a key objective of operations
• Six Sigma is the study of variation reduction,
which improves quality, which is always a key
objective of operations
8.
9. STEP 1 – Work with your quality & training
managers to build infrastructure using ISO
to establish a basic management system
which includes management review,
training, corrective/preventive action and
internal audits
• Management review will create KPIs which
are critical to lean/six sigma projects later
• Training on established processes is critical to
reducing waste/variation later
• CAPA is critical to lean AND Six Sigma
• Internal audits are critical to the sustainability
of all of it!
10.
11. STEP 2 – Implement 5S and “Waste Walks”
• 5S is an exercise in organizing a workspace for
maximum effectiveness. It is a very tangible
method for setting expectations
• “Waste Walks” teach the new skill of constant
inspection for waste in processes and
workspaces
• Both of these support ISO compliance for
product realization, training, work environment,
internal audits and more.
12.
13. STEP 3 – Do a process-by-process review
• Work with your quality manager to
establish a control plan for each
• This supports ISO compliance for
planning, product realization, customer
related processes and will later become a
value-stream map which is critical to Six
Sigma
• Work with your training manager to
translate the control plans into training
• This supports ISO compliance for
training, documentation and eliminates
waste/variation by not duplicating
documents
