What projects related to
artificial lift & production
optimization are you
currently working on
at Evolution Petroleum
Corporation?
Evolution has been
installing its artificial lift
technology (Gas Assisted
Rod Pump or GARP) in
horizontal wells in the
Giddings Austin Chalk Field
for the past three years.
Since we have limited
company owned wells, we
are now installing GARP into
third party operated wells.
What do you see as the
key artificial lift challenges
being faced in the
Woodford at the moment?
How can this event
deliver solutions to these
challenges?
Horizontal wells in the
Woodford have the same
artificial lift challenges
as horizontal wells in the
Giddings Austin Chalk
Field since the wellbores
have a similar geometry.
Conventional artificial lift
was not designed to
be placed in the deviated
section of horizontal
wells. Most operators
will install pumps in the
vertical portion of the well
since placement into the
deviated section leads to
high operating costs due
to mechanical failures, and
gas and solids interference
in the pump. Since the
pump is placed relatively
high above the reservoir,
liquids below the pump
cause additional back
pressure on the reservoir
which reduces production
and will eventually lead to
pre-mature abandonment
of the well. Gas lift will
also lead to pre-mature
abandonment since it also
places significant back
pressure on the reservoir.
Your presentation focuses
on gas lift assisted rod
pump, could you give some
insight into this?
GARP provides operators
with a new method of
artificial lift which combines
gas lift with a rod pump in a
two stage lift process.
It utilizes a dual tubing
arrangement providing a
dedicated tubing string for
the rod pump and gas lift.
The rod pump is placed in
the vertical portion of the
well to prevent gas and
solids interference and high
operating costs, while gas
is used to lift liquids from
the deviated section to
above the rod pump, where
they can then be lifted to
the surface.
In your opinion, why should
people attend the Woodford
Production Optimization
2014 Congress?
The presentation of new
ideas and technology is
crucial to reducing costs
and increasing production
and reserves. Operators
cannot expect better
results if they are doing
the same things over and
over again. This conference
provides operators with
new ideas and methods to
optimize production.
Our speaker faculty
draws upon a wealth
of experience from
professionals in the
Woodford, including
companies such as Dorado
E&P, Caballo Energy,
Repsol Energy and more.
Which company are you
most looking forward to
hearing from?
We want to expose our
technology to all operators
who have wells that will
benefit. Therefore we do not
have a particular operator
in mind.
