If Money was no object what would you
be doing?
If money was no object what would you be
doing?
I posed this question to a friend of mine and here the response!
You are with friends, gathered around the warm glow of a campfire, or perhaps on
the porch for an after dinner mug of coffee. Conversation ebbs and flows around
the usual topics…
Work
Family
Current events in politics
Sports
There is a lull and someone
throws out the question….
“If money was no object
what would you be doing?”
A few faces
become thoughtful others light up with a smile and
have their list ready, and one or two with a derisive
“as if…” refuse to participate.
A common enough scenario, played out around a common enough question. A
question that bears a closer look at, because it is neither about money
or activities At the heart of it, this question is very much all about time-
specifically. Who time belongs to and what is done with it.
On the day you arrived into the world, a gift was waiting for you. This gift was a
block of time. Then as now, you have no idea how large or small this gift is, but it
is your gift none the less. It was given to you and belongs to you!
2. The world you entered into is a large one. As you grew older, you were required to
part with some of the gift you were given to learn about this world, about others in
it and how to relate to it. So you parted with a portion of your gift, though perhaps
grudgingly )I don’t want to go to school) and after the requisite amount of time
spent, school was done and now time was yours again. You were now free to do
whatever you liked!! You could spend your time as you wanted! Right?? Well…let
us back up briefly to that original question asked around the campfire.
Notice the first part, “if money was no object what
would you be doing?” Lets look at that first part.
As you grew up there were things in this world that you needed and or wanted. To
obtain these things, however required that you have money, and that in exchange
for this money, you receive the things you wanted/needed. When young, you may
have been given some money on occasion but once older, probably when school
was done, you had to find this money yourself. AS a general rule, you discovered
that money could be gained by finding and holding onto a job. All well and good…
except for one detail... TIME.
Remember that gift you were given at birth? The job you now have also demands
that you part with some of the time you won, with a catch. Someone else decides
what the worth or value of your time is and this value is given to you in the form of
money.
Now think about the things you obtained
with the money earlier. Once you
exchanged the money for things, you
became the owner of those things. At your
job, a similar exchange takes place-namely
the employer purchased your time for an
amount of money. The gift you received at
birth has been deemed to be of certain value ( whatever that value may be-that is
another topic) and is now owned by another. What you can or cannot do is
now determined in part by that other who owns your time.
Back to the campfire question… If money was no object what would you be
3. doing? We ask this, assuming 2 things-that money is an object or impediment,
and that we would be doing something different.
The friction we feel however has to do with
neither.. It has to do with TIME. It is about the
fact that a free gift we had since birth is now
owned, to some degree, by someone else. The
fact that we cannot know how much of this gift
we have adds to the unease., unhappiness,
discomfort that we feel. The clearer question
must be ”If TIME was no object what would you
be doing?
This really focuses the question and demands a little more thought, because time
really is no object except for one large, looming fact WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW
MUCH OF IT WE ARE GIVEN!
Given that fact, how we spend the gift we have takes on more significance simply
due to the fact we do not know when it will run out.
So gather around that warm campfire, put the coffee on… and throw this question
out there.
There is always time for that!!
Many thanks goes to my great friend who was willing to share some thoughts with
me!
By the way,
Here is a way to claim back your time.
