Perhaps best known as James Bond, but more recent roles have included &quot; The Untouchables &quot;, for which he won an Oscar and the &quot; Hunt for Red October &quot;. Also an accomplished amateur golfer. </li></ul><ul><li>Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) </li></ul><ul><li>Author. Creator of the detective Sherlock Holmes. He graduated from Edinburgh University in medicine and practised in Edinburgh, aboard ship and in the Boer War. </li></ul><ul><li>Sir Alexander Fleming (1881 - 1955) </li></ul><ul><li>Born in Ayrshire, he discovered the world's first antibiotic drug - Penicillin. This was as a result of an &quot;accident&quot; where mould was allowed to grow on a bacterial culture. Fleming was knighted and received the Nobel Prize in 1944. </li></ul><ul><li>Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) </li></ul><ul><li>Author. His works included &quot; Kidnapped &quot; and &quot; Treasure Island &quot;. Suffered from poor health and died in Samoa </li></ul><ul><li>William Wallace (1274 - 1305) </li></ul><ul><li>Outlaw and defender of Scottish independence. Defeated the army of Edward I at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Shortly after Wallace's execution, Robert the Bruce was able to re-establish Scotland's independence </li></ul>
