1. Learn to Fly – Foo Fighters
Target Audience
The target audience for this music video would be rock fans and Nirvana fans. This is because of the
iconic singer Dave Grohl who was in the successful band Nirvana. Because of this Foo Fighters
became popular quickly as a Commercial Rock band. As well as this Tenacious D fans would be more
attracted to the music video as the two Members Jack Black and Kyle Glass are in the beginning and
end of the narrative as the caretakers.
Narrative/Concept/Performance
The video is split between Narrative and a small part of performance which is contained within the
narrative. The style of the narrative is a comedy which shows the commercial representation of the
band.

Representation
There are different figures that are represented
within the music video. The main representation is
the airline staff and passengers. Both of these
groups of people are very eccentric and
exaggerated. An example is the feminine flight
attendant which is represents the stereotypical male flight attendants. These roles are all played by
the people in the band (or the people who were in it at the time) including the women roles. This
makes the video comical. The main representation of all the flight staff is clumsy and they do not
seem bothered about what they a doing. This also adds to the comedy effect of the video by
exaggerating their laziness etc.
2. Themes
One of the main themes
that are brought up in
the video is safety and
security. This is
represented by showing
the band, who is
important famous
people; get onto a
plane full of lazy,
immature, irresponsible
staff. The pilots are
seen messing around
and flirting with the
stewards and the
caretakers are seen
putting drugs into the
water in which everyone will be drinking. This brings out the theme of security and shows that
people cannot be trusted even with something serious.
Personal and Emotional Response
When watching this video I found myself laughing at the way
that the characters were portrayed particularly the
stereotypical fan girl who asks for Dave Grohls Autograph.
Mise En Scene
The setting for the video is set entirely on an aeroplane
complimenting the songs title “learn to fly”.
Character and Performance
The characters within the narrative are all exaggerated and quite odd. As well as this most of their
personalities are the opposite to their gender for example the females are quite masculine whereas
the male characters are feminine apart from the fan girl and members of the band on the plane.
Costume Hair and Make Up
The female flight attendant is wearing dark red lipstick and heavy makeup. The pilots and male
attendants all have moustaches. These show the stereotypical representation of aeroplane flight
crews and pilots therefore adding to the comedy effect.
3. Lighting and Colour
The lighting within the video is quite bright up until before the end when the lights begin to flash due
to the fact of the plane falling. This creates a disturbed mood to the audience but because the song is
not over we expect that they will be saved somehow. The characters within the end scene still behave
strangely and exaggerated thus keeping the funny atmosphere within the video.
Diegetic Sound
Diegetic sound is heard at the beginning and end when the two caretakers are putting drugs into the
coffee machine and then hiding them just as the FBI boards the plane, although no dialogue is
spoken a quite song can be heard which is supposedly being played on the plane.
Editing
The editing in the video is at a medium pace not really matching with the song, instead the video just
shows multiple small narratives of the largely sized attendants, fan girl, pilots and flight crew. As well
as this we see the band performing on a small screen from time to time which represents the
performance element of the video.
Camera Work
The camera in the video is mostly tracking action shots showing the different parts of concept and
narrative within the video.
Storyline
The overall story is about various passengers on an aeroplane and the representations of them as
well as the people who work on the plane. The story shows two caretakers hiding drugs in a coffee
machine which then makes people on the plane go crazy and nearly crash the plane, until the Foo
Fighters step in and land the plane therefore they have learned to fly which relates to the song title
“learn to fly”
