Beautiful analysis
1. Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Target Audience
The target audience for the music video in beautiful is aimed mainly at people who want to change
the way they look or feel about themselves. Because this type of target does not have a specific
age/gender etc the music video shows a wide variety of different people therefore getting the
message and themes across to as many as possible.
Narrative/Concept/Performance
The main two elements in the music video are Concept and Performance. The video switches
between these two frequently. The concept part of the video shows different types of people is
ranging from skinny, large, tall, small and gay or straight either looking into a mirror consciously
or out in public acting like themselves. This shows the difference between people who are upset
with the way they feel and the people who accept who they are and embrace it for example the
homosexuals kissing in public on a bench, with happy facial expressions shows they’re happy. This
is similar to the Performance part of the video in which we see Christina Aguilera looking in the
mirror whilst singing signifying, she too, is conscious about herself.

Representation
The people in the video are mainly represented as
either being insecure or secure. Although the age
group for the actors are young people/adults. We do
not see any elderly people or young children in the
video therefore the video portrays that it is mainly
young people who are conscious about the way they
look.
2. Themes
The themes that are shown in this video are homosexuality and
insecurity. This is shown within the shots of people who are
looking into the mirror showing that they are upset with the
way they look.
Personal and Emotional Response
After watching this video I felt more accepting of others and felt like you never know whether
someone is truly happy or sad therefore everyone should interact together positively rather than
care about how they look.
Mise En Scene
In most of the shots of the actors there is very dark
lighting and they are usually either having no pants or
top on. Regarding to the piece of clothing that is not
being worn it shows the area in which the character is
conscious about. Whereas Christina Aguilera is in all
black clothing signifying that she may be conscious
about something else perhaps mentally.
Character and Performance
In the video Christina Aguilera has upset facial expressions and does not look at the camera often
apart from in the chorus when she is saying “you are beautiful”. Christina’s body language and
performance from this signifies she is conscious of herself as well as the other characters in the
video.
Costume Hair And Make Up
When looking at the actors in the video we can see
none of them have any makeup on apart from one
part when a medium shot shows a man putting
women’s makeup on, and wearing a bra, necklace
and earrings, whilst looking in the mirror. This
signifies the man is trying to be different and is
3. clearly not happy being the way he is without being feminine. In contrast to this all the other
actors in the video have no makeup on, which later on we see them smiling. The actors smiling at
the end without any makeup or jewellery on symbolizes that people can be happy and don’t have
to be afraid to be themselves regardless of gender, sexuality or just how you look in general.
Lighting And Colour
For most of the video the lighting is very dark and we cannot see much in the shot apart from the
actor and a small space around them therefore putting the focus on them.
Diegetic Sound
This video contains no non diegetic sound thus keeping the message within the song rather than
having a small scene to start off the story.
Editing
The editing in the video is quite fast constantly cutting to different people who symbolize different
things. This works well with the song as it reminds us constantly of how people seem different but
actually we are all the same. As well as this the fast paced editing helps the audience keep interest
in the video as we are inclined to see if the people
are happy.
Camera Work
In regards to camera work most of the shots are
either close ups or medium shots. The medium
shots are used to show the character and what
they are doing. The close ups are used to show the
specific areas of which a character is conscious
about or how the character is reacting to that
area.
Storyline
There is no specific journey or narrative within this music video. The characters in the video do end
up happy by the end which is what their goal is but there is no proper story that is told.
