  • 1. Here are some great examples of green materials for the home, some may work for you and all can be executed quickly with a minimum amount of effort.
  • 2. Energy Saving Appliances
  • 3. I am the poster child for this. If you get nothing else out of this article, the next time you buy appliances make sure they are rated well by EnergyStar. This will save you a lot of money and most of the appliances will pay for themselves eventually in terms of energy savings.
  • 4. Lighting
  • 5. Same deal here. The right lighting and bulbs will save you a fortune. Try to stay away from the energy saving bulbsthat contain mercury if at all possible. I used to have a lotof those, but replaced them because I didnt want to takea chance on one of them breaking which has been known to happen when you have kids.
  • 6. Tankless Water Heaters
  • 7. I would love to have one of these. The water is heated on demand and it saves a lot of money in energy costs.
  • 8. Low Flow Faucets and Shower Heads
  • 9. A low flow showerhead is an acquired taste and I have yet to find one that really feels great regardless of the marketing, but they do save a lot of water. If you find a good one, let me know and I will try it, review it and publish it.
  • 10. LED faucets that turn on and off automatically
  • 11. I personally hate these, but for anyone with kids, they area godsend and lets face it, they do save a lot of water and that is what is important.
  • 12. Bamboo Flooring
  • 13. The advantage to Bamboo from a sustainability standpoint is that it grows quickly and is much more durable than hardwood (according to the manufacturers). In theory, I think this is an excellent idea and I have been to several building and flooring shows where it is advocated, but Icant tell you from personal experience. I think you should do some research first.
  • 14. Recycled glass counter tops
  • 15. Some of these look really cool and they are a greatconversation piece at cocktail parties as well as being eco friendly.
  • 16. Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power
  • 17. Someone is going to find a way to make solar power affordable and make the panels razor thin and easily connectible. The day that happens, I am quittingeverything and buying a franchise in that company. Untilthen, Ill wait. As far a wind power goes, this should be a no brainer for anyone that can accommodate it.
  • 18. Eco Friendly Furniture
  • 19. Here is a no brainer. Furniture made from sustainable orrecycled materials, or certified wood. This is good for the environment and a great conversation piece when you entertain.
  • 20. It bears repeating, the bottom line on all of the above is dont take anyones word for it. Do your own research. With the internet, it should be a piece of cake.Additionally, follow some of the links on this site. We have already vetted them and trust them.
