What is cyberbullying? Bullying through internet applications Instant messaging, social networks sites, cell phones Victims can be targeted anywhere, anytime Two types- directly and by proxy Directly- sent to your kids directly Proxy- using others to help bully Proxy much more dangerous because it can get adults involved When adults become involved, it becomes cyber-stalking of cyber harassment
Forms of cyberbullying Flaming/Trolling- sending hostile messages to inflame the emotions of others Happy-slapping-recording someone being bullied and posting it for public viewing Identity Theft-stealing someone’s password to hack into accounts and post humiliating pictures, videos, or information Photoshopping-doctoring digital images to put victim in embarrassing situation Physical threats-sending threats to a person’s physical safety Rumor spreading-spreading gossip through email, messaging, or social network sites Sexting- sending nude or provocative pictures to someome else on a cell phone
Statistics In a recent survey of 1500 eighth graders: 58% of kids say that someone has said hurtful things about them online 53% of kids admit saying something hurtful about someone else online 42% of kids say they have been bullied online 58% of kids say they have not told parents or adults that they have been bullied online
I-Safe Foundation Over half of adolescents have been bullied online and about the same number have bullied online More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced  cyberthreats 25% have been  bullied repeatedly Well over half never tell their parents 56% of cyber bullying occurs in chat rooms

Tips for Parents Parents need to be the one trusted place for kids to go when things go wrong online or offline. Do not overreact,  but take it seriously Contact the school Ask yourself: Is my child at risk of physical harm? How are they doing emotionally? Contact local law enforcement agency Monitor your child regularly
Tips for Teachers Have a clear understanding of what cyberbullying is and isn’t Talk to your students- education is the key Know your school policies and review them so that you understand them Set and discuss boundaries with students Recognize the signs and get help if needed Teach children how to “Take 5” and think before they post Encourage students to report cyberbullying
Tips for Students Tell a trusted adult if you are being cyberbullied Do not open, read, or respond to messages from cyberbullies If it is school related, tell your school Do not erase messages.  They could be used later to take action against the cyberbully If bullied through chat or IM, the bully can often be blocked If you are threatened with harm,  call the police
