Only in comics does one get a character like Vampirella ordinary prominent role in the actual
medium's history. Vampirella will be arguably, with Wonder Girl and Red Sonja, just about
the most iconic female characters throughout comics. Which is somewhat problematic given
that she's meant as the mashup of Uncle Weird and Elvira -- generally, kind of a sordid mix
from which iconic characters grow. In a lot of ways, she's one with the purer manifestations
of genuine old school objectification-of-women-on-comic-covers. There is certainly that. But
then on the reverse side, Vampirella also stands for something diffrent: she is pretty much
directly on the crossroads of sex/death horror comics. There was a say of fantastic Alberto
Breccia-influenced performers who found homes inside pages of Vampirella comics from the
1970s, artists who did things with all the page that even now could be classed as completely
mind-blowing.
My interest in Vampirella is her role as being a symbol of just-outside-the-mainstream artists
from all over the world completely going wild delightfully. When I first became aware of the
fact that there was a Vampirella art book from Dynamite, I was pretty pumped up about it.
Right away, my head was stuffed with images of José Gonzalez, Gonzalo Mayo, Fernando
Fernandez, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, Esteban Maroto, Frank Frazetta, and Sanjulian. For me
personally, the art of these old Vampirella magazines is certainly one of my key touchstones
as an artist and represents the kind of comics I would choose to see more of. And so i was a
little shocked once i got the art book and learned that it's actually all covers -- instead of the
old, amazing covers from your Warren Comics days, but mostly covers on the run of "bad
girl" Vampirella comics through the '90s to the 2000s. The book turned from an issue that I
was rabidly anticipating to an issue that I was initially unsure of where to start with.
But after getting a chance to go through The Fine art of Vampirella --which involves work by
modern stylists including Dave Stevens, Jae Shelter, Amanda Conner, Mike Mignola, Phil
Noto, Michael Golden, Dan Brereton, Bruce Timm, Arthur Suydam, Adam Hughes, Later on
Jusko, Jim Lee and more -- I need to say in the end My business is really pleased to own it.
