We’ll be reading…
--Macbeth, by William Shakespeare
--The Crucible, Arthur Miller
--The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
excerpts from: Huck Finn; Their Eyes Were Watching
God; Nickel and Dimed, and more.
Course Description and Objectives
whatyou can expect this year…
English 11 is designed to be a year-long conversation about literature and language within a
community of readers and writers. We will move chronologically through the works,
beginning in the 1600s and ending in the mid-20
th
century. You can expect to be writing
essays, creating presentations and other projects, reviewing grammar and increasing your
vocabulary, working in groups and collaborating and sharing your ideas with your peers.
This is going to be a busy year for all of us—be ready for it.
You’ve got the SATs, an ELA Regents Exam, the State Common Core exam, and the Junior
Thesis paper and presentation to prepare for in addition to your other classes, extra-
curriculars, sports, etc… It will require a great deal of focus, diligence, and organization on your
part. It is my sincere hope that this course will allow you to see literature in a new light, and
see the benefits of your hard work—and of course, much, much more. I look forward to an
exciting year with you!

Grading
Though each assignment will vary in point
value, you will be made aware of the
value when the assignment is given.
Homework assignments are generally
between 10-25 points; major papers and
projects 100 points, etc. Grading will be
based upon the following:
Class participation and
preparedness
Homework
Quizzes
Tests
Essays and other writing
assignments
Homework Policy
All assignments are due at the beginning
of class. Students are expected to
complete all homework assignments on
time. Late assignments will only be
accepted in the case of excused absences.
No partial credit will be given for
unexcused late assignments. If it’s not
completed at the start of class, it’s a zero.
Major assignments will be docked 10%
per day late (not per class meeting).
Absences from class
If you are absent, it is your responsibility
to get the work. This is very easy:
1. Check the class website. All
assignments will be posted the
day they are assigned.
2. Email me. I can send an
assignment home, answer any
questions, etc.
3. Find me. Room 209—before
school, before class, after class,
anytime.
4. Ask a friend. They should know
what’s going on.
There are no excuses when getting
missed work is this easy. Don’t ask, “Did I
miss anything?” Of course you did.
Follow the steps above, stay on track, and
you’ll be set.
Materials
The things you’ll need to succeed:
Three-ring binder and dividers
Loose-leaf paper, highlighter
3x5 cards for vocab
Junior Thesis
This is a major writing assignment taken
very seriously by the English Department
at VHS. It is imperative that all due dates
are met. You will be given a list of specific
due dates at the start of the project to
ensure the entire process runs smoothly.
Obviously, late assignments will incur a
late penalty.
All assignments will count as part of the
quarter grade under which they fall due.
The final draft of your Junior Thesis
will be worth 50% of your
2
nd
Quarter Average
grading policies,
class procedures
and expectations.
Still have
questions?
Make an
appointment with
me, stop by my
