You will be using Blackboard throughout most of your undergraduate career.
Blackboard Learn is a Learning Management system designed to enhance learning and communication between the students and the professor. From Blackboard you can access the course Syllabus, course materials, turn in homework, take quizzes & tests and more. Blackboard Learn makes learning more effective in and beyond the traditional walls of a classroom.
Blackboard runs on PC’s, MAC’s, and mobile devices such as phones and tablets. From a mobile device, Blackboard can be accessed through the mobile application which it can be downloaded from the app store. On computers Blackboard can be accessed with multiple with different browsers, such as Safari, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, but it performs best with Mozilla Firefox which it can be downloaded from mozilla.org. Some tools inside Blackboard require java to be installed. The latest version of which be downloaded from java.com
To login to Blackboard you will need to use your CaneID. CaneID is a username/password authentication process that provides access to multiple University systems via the use of one username/password. You will need to know It to access your Umail, Canelink and more. So it is recommended that you memorize it.
You can access Blackboard from multiple links, both of these urls will take you to this page. From here, you will be prompted to log in to Blackboard using your CaneID username and Password.
Once you’re in Blackboard you will find that everything is very simple to locate. There are multiple ways to access your courses in Blackboard. For example, you can access your courses from My Available Course Sites Module inside of the Blackboard Tab or By clicking on the Courses Tab.
Once you are in your course site you will have access to the course menu.
The course menu contains useful tools & resources such as
The Announcements module – here your professor may post time-sensitive material including corrections of materials, exam schedules, if the class is canceled for a certain day and more. Your professor can post anything in the Announcements module, so it is important to check it.
The syllabus module – this is where you will find your course Syllabus. Most professors include office hours, policies, and grading criteria for the course in their Syllabus.
The course Documents module- this is where you will find course materials such as power point presentations, reviews to any lessons covered in class, or any additional information that your professor may find to be important.
The assignments module- from here you will be able to turn in homework and projects or takes quizzes and tests assigned by your professor. Blackboard allows for deadlines to be applied for each specific assignment, so be mindful of the time that you turn in your assignments.
My Grades module- From here, you will be able to see the grades earned on tests, quizzes, homework, projects and more. Keep in mind that some professors do not use the grade center on Blackboard, so you may or may not see any grades posted.
Send Email module- from here you will be able to contact your professor or classmates via email.
This is a brief example of what your course menu may look like, but the truth is that your professor may decide to use the modules a different way or name them something else.
There may be a time when you do not see all of the courses you are enrolled in on Blackboard. Your professor can set the course to “unavailable” meaning that the course is not available for students to access it. Once the course is set to “Available”, you will be able to access the course and the material posted by professor. Some professors decide to not use Blackboard, if that is the case the course will be set to “unavailable” meaning that you will not see it on Blackboard. If you do not see a course you are enrolled in on Blackboard, It is always best that you ask the professor if he/she will be using Blackboard to teach the course.
Although Blackboard is a user friendly system and easy to use, you may run into some complications that may require additional help. You can seek assistance by calling the Blackboard Help Desk anytime between 9am-9pm or by Sending an email at anytime to blackboardhelp@Miami.edu
From the Help tab in Blackboard, you will have access to handouts and video tutorials. With its innovative technologies and solutions Blackboard will bring you closer to the knowledge you seek and potential you can achieve.
