History of Reggae <ul><li>Reggae music originated in the late 1960’s in Jamaica in a town called Kingston </li></ul><ul><li>When Jamaica was control by Spain many slaves would be brought to Jamaica from Africa </li></ul><ul><li>They would bring their own culture, beliefs and music </li></ul><ul><li>Their earliest music was Jamaican Folks Music </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>In the early 1900 Mento was formed which led to the development of Ska </li></ul><ul><li>During world war II Jamaicans listen to Jazz and R&B </li></ul><ul><li>The Ska beat was made slower which created Rock Steady </li></ul><ul><li>Rock Steady only lasted 2 years and the led into Reggae </li></ul>

Influences <ul><li>Reggae had a great influence on people from Jamaica because many of the topics that were sang had messages dealing with Jamaican life </li></ul><ul><li>Many of topics were about happiness, poverty, relationships, love, religion, peace, sexuality, injustice and poverty </li></ul><ul><li>Also they would sing about political issues </li></ul><ul><li>When reggae first came out it was mostly popular in Jamaica </li></ul><ul><li>Most of the reggae artist would start their carriers in Kingston </li></ul>

  6. 6. Guitar <ul><li>The guitar mostly used in reggae are the Rhythm guitar and the Led guitar </li></ul><ul><li>The rhythm of the guitar is very important in reggae </li></ul><ul><li>Guitarist usually play in the upstroke in beats 2 and 4 </li></ul>
  7. 7. Drums <ul><li>The drums in reggae are usually tuned high, to give it timbale-type sound </li></ul><ul><li>Some drummers add percussion instruments like the triangle and horn </li></ul>
  8. 8. Bass <ul><li>The most cowmen instrument played is the bass guitar </li></ul><ul><li>When played it is played at a low tune, to give it a heavy thick sound </li></ul>
  9. 9. Other <ul><li>Keyboardist use pianos, organs, and synthesizers to double the skanking rhythm of the guitar and to give the music a choppy, shuffling feel </li></ul><ul><li>Reggae groups use trumpets, trombones, and saxophones in introductions and to add countermelodies to songs </li></ul>

Bob Marley <ul><li>He was born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945, in St.Ann, Jamaica </li></ul><ul><li>Soon as he was born his father left his mother </li></ul><ul><li>In the late 50’s due to the low amount of jobs Bob had to go to Trench tow (west Kingston) with his mother </li></ul><ul><li>In Kingston he meats Neville Livingstone who becomes his best friend </li></ul><ul><li>Bob and Neville take music classes from the Jamaican singer Joe Higgs </li></ul><ul><li>Jimmy Cliff introduced Bob to Leslie Kong, a local record producer which help him record his first single &quot;Judge Not&quot; </li></ul>

The Wailers <ul><li>The band was formed in 1963 with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer </li></ul><ul><li>Other members were Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelson, Cherry Smith, Aston and Carlton Barrett </li></ul><ul><li>The Wailers help spread reggae all over the world </li></ul><ul><li>They would go on tours to the United Kingdom </li></ul><ul><li>The band ended with the death of Bob Marley during 1981 </li></ul><ul><li>http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =pd2GZqQOuRw </li></ul>

Ziggy Marley <ul><li>He was born David Marley on October 17, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica </li></ul><ul><li>He recorded his first single with his 3 siblings in 1979: “Children Playing in the Streets” which was written by his father </li></ul><ul><li>After his father passed a way ziggy created the band the Melody Makers that consisted of his siblings </li></ul><ul><li>In addition to his music, Marley established the U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightment) organization to help children in poverty </li></ul>
