Setting personal development goals is a little different from setting income or career advancement or relationship goals. Actually what makes it different is that it has to come BEFORE you can make great advances in these other areas. Like Jim Rohn says, “Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.” Work on becoming a more attractive person this year!

What are personal development goals?
Setting personal development goals is a little different from setting income or career
advancement or relationship goals. Actually what makes it different is that it has to come
BEFORE you can make great advances in these other areas.
Like Jim Rohn says,
“Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the
person you become.”
2. “The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle”
Think about working on the early phases of the five areas that Jim Rohn considered to be “The
Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle”. These included developing a strong personal philosophy
which would direct our attitude. Our attitude controls the activity we invest in ourselves or our
business and the results are proportionate to that activity. The combined results of our
philosophy, attitude, activity and results make up our lifestyle.
Work on your personal philosophy!
Set goals to work on your philosophy over this next year. Identify the past events, people and
experiences that have formed your values. Which ones are serving you well now and which ones
are holding you back? Set goals to develop the new disciplines necessary to replace those
limiting beliefs to create the personal philosophy that will help you attract success.
Develop an appetite for learning!
One of the first personal development skills that Jim Rohn said that he personally had to develop
was an appetite for learning. If you don’t already have a ritual of daily reading from some
motivational or personal development source, add that to your list of goals for this next year.
Pursue learning that will help you grow and expand your personal philosophy. So much
information is available now if you just look for it. Try different things. Develop your personal
development library and use it regularly.
As Jim Rohn says in this video, “What you think about is like the sail on the sailboat.” No
matter how the wind blows, you can arrive at your destination by allowing your thinking to
adjust your sails. But you need a lot of resources in your mind to help you make the adjustments
during the various storms of life.
So, although you will want to set goals for the different aspects of your life, don’t forget to spend
some time focused on what you want to develop in yourself over the next year. Your personal
development goals are the foundation for all your other goals.
