The story of the proposed hovering pedestrian donut at Grand Central Terminal was first broken by the MAS NYC Blog on October 18th, without any images. It was then picked up by other architecture and art blogs over the following days and weeks, with each adding new angles, photographs, and headlines building off the previous coverage. This spread of the story through related blog networks demonstrated how headlines, images, and details were shared and evolved across multiple posts over time.
The document is a series of slides from an online course on gardening. It covers the basics of starting a garden, including necessary tools and equipment, different soil types, common pests, and taking a quiz to assess understanding. The slides progress through the topics week by week and include images, definitions, and instructions to listen to accompanying audio lectures.
This document lists 10 facts about chewing gum, including that chewing gum is banned in Singapore, kids in North America spend $500 million per year on bubble gum, the first bubble gum was pink because that was the only color left, and 100,000 tons of bubble gum is chewed worldwide each year.

This document lists 15 facts about mobile phones. Some key facts include that mobile phones today have more computing power than the Apollo 11 computers, Apple sold over 340,000 iPhones per day in 2012, and mobile phones have 18 times more bacteria than toilet handles. It also notes that in Japan 90% of phones are waterproof, over 100,000 phones are dropped in toilets in Britain each year, and that mobile phone throwing is an official sport in Finland.
The document discusses common myths about resumes and provides tips for effective resume building. The document lists 10 facts about the UK. It states that in the UK people who reach 100 years old receive a birthday card from the Queen. It also notes that children over 5 can drink alcohol at home, Nigeria has more English speakers than the UK, and US and UK eggs cannot be sold in each other's countries due to different washing requirements. It concludes by mentioning the world's shortest flight time of 2 minutes between UK islands, and that riding a hoverboard in public is illegal in the UK.

1. In ancient Rome and Greece, hosts would drink from wine cups first to prove to guests they were not being poisoned, and the tradition of clinking glasses originated to help prevent poisoning.
2. In ancient Rome, women were forbidden from drinking wine and a husband could legally kill his wife if he found her drinking it.
3. In Vietnam, some restaurants serve "cobra wine" which is rice wine with snake blood and sometimes the snake's heart added for those seeking an extreme beverage experience.
The document lists 10 interesting facts about coffee, including that it is the world's second most valuable traded commodity after petroleum, it takes 140 liters of water to grow and process the beans for one cup of coffee, and one of the most expensive coffee brands uses elephant dung in its production process.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024Vadym Kazulkin
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
