1. Dear Brian
As discussed in Washington in June, attached is a draft outline of a guide for VHA
researchers and VHA staff to use to plan and carry out partnerhip research (one of a
number of documents and publications our project can produce. There may also be
a general guide for a wider group of researchers and practitioners)
The purpose of this first draft is so that we can agree an outline, see where the gaps
are, and then prioritise our time in the next weeks so that we are able to produce a
usable guide draft for David and others to comment on.
Of course, much will be revised as work from the overview (and perhaps case
studies) is completed.
Brian's view (and I hope I am not misrepresenting this), with which I agree, is the
guide can draw on the PCORI methods draft and that some of the research only
community based development may not be so relevant to VHA staff and researchers,
although some of the principles might be.
Partnership Research: A guide
Authors
SUMMARY
This guide gives researchers and staff recommendations for carrying out
partnership research. It is based on an overview of research and inteviews with staff
in the VHA using this approach to research. Partneship research is an investigation
of a health or healthcare problem or solution involving researchers and others
working together in different ways in different phases of the investigation. There is
reason and some evidence to believe that more relevant, valid and actionable
knowledge may be possible for some subjects using this approach. The guidance
suggests which subjects are most suited to partnership research approaches. It
shows the choices between approaches within this category, and gives guidance for
planing, carrying out and implementing the research.
