1. Why are there only 4 black
managers in all 92 English
Professional football clubs?

2. Topic
• The topic of this documentary is to find the reasons
behind why there are only 4 black managers in all 92
professional English football clubs.
• Seeing as there are roughly the same amount of black
players as there are white players you would assume
that the ratio would be more equal than 22:1
• Also it has only been in recent years that these
managers have been given their job roles as a result of
criticism from the FA (Football Association)

3. Purpose
• This documentary’s purpose will be to
investigate the reasons why only 4 of the 92
English Professional football managers are
black.
• I would also like to find out if there is anything
going on to rectify the issue.

4. Conventions Used
• Due to this being an investigative
documentary I am aiming to get at least 2 I
major interviews. Ideally these will be with
club owners, who are the people behind the
hiring and firing of club managers.
• I would also like to get an interview with a
black ex footballer who is trying to get into a
managerial role, to illustrate whether it is
actually as difficult as it seems.

5. Mode Of Address
• The mode of address will be formal because
although football is generally a fairly informal
topic, the section in football that I am aiming
to make a documentary about is a and serious
topic, and therefore I feel like a formal
approach would be more suitable.

6. Target Audience
• The Target audience for this documentary is
black males aged 35-45.
• However in my opinion white males would be
extremely interested in this documentary
therefore I believe I have a very strong
secondary target audience of males of the
same age but white British.

7. Primary Research and Findings
• For my primary research of this topic I asked the
following 2 questions :
• Do you think ex black footballers are discouraged from becoming
managers because they are a minority?
• When applying for a managerial job are black men less likely to get
the job because of their race?
• For the first question 6 out of the 8 people I asked believed that
being a minority is not the reason why their are hardly any
managers.
• For the second question I asked the same 8 people and again 6
people said that they think that black men are at a disadvantage to
get the job because they are black.

8. Secondary Research And Findings
In the article we have Frank Rijkaard one
of the most successful black managers
ever. When he was at Barcelona he won
2 league titles 2 super cups and 1
champions league in the space of 3 years
which is a great achievement and only
something amazing managers do. He is a
great example to show that ethnicity is
not something that should hold a
manager back (this is also explained in
the article). It also explains that to fans it
looks like racism has gone from football
now as on the pitch players are not
treated any differently however behind
the scenes clubs have been criticized that
it has not.
