Wifi And Mobile Phone Health Risks (Gaby, Gerardo, Javier)

 1. 1. Wifi and Mobile phone health risks By: Javier Batlle Gabriela Avila Gerardo Eguizabal
 2. 2. What health risks are associated with mobile phones?

What are mobile phones?

a long-range, electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations

Mobile phones use electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range, and some believe this may be harmful to human health

These health risks can be divided into diffrent categories

 3. 3. Health risk categories:

Radiation absorption:

-Radio waves emitted by a mobile telephone handset are absorbed by the human head, during talking. However there are standards towards how much power output a cellphone can emit. For example: in Europe the limit is 2 watts per kg.

* Studies suggest radiation could cause benign brain tumors

 4. 4.

Ear tumors: Using cellphones for more than ten years increases the possibility of ear tumors. Example: A 750-people study by Sweden's Karolinska Institute found the risk of acoustic neuroma (A type of tumor) rose by 3.9 times on the side of the head the phone is used. URL:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3742120.stm

Thermal risks:

For a person using a cell phone, most of the heating effect will occur at the surface of the head due to the realease of microwave radiation which heats up the living tissue. This is less exposure than the sun but it has been proved that more than 3 hours of this exposure has caused catarats to develop in rabbits, however cellphones do not emoit enough radiation to cause this in such a limited number of hours.

 5. 5.

Blood-brain barrier effects:

From the study of the effects of radiowaves on rats, it has been proven to have the effect of causing a leakage of a toxic “Albumin” into the neuron cells which can cause permanent damage

Mobile phones and cancer:

-A Swedish scientific team at the Karolinska Institute conducted a study in 2004 that suggested regular use of a mobile phone over a decade was associated with an increased risk of benign brain tumors.

-Dr Vini Khurana (Cancer expert)-using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Opposition:

Mobile Operators Association dismissed Khurana's study as "a selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual". It believes he "does not present a balanced analysis" of the published science, and "reaches opposite conclusions to the WHO and more than 30 other independent expert scientific reviews".

URL:http :// www.independent.co.uk / life - style / health - and - wellbeing / health - news / mobile -phones-more- dangerous - than -smoking- or -asbestos-802602. html?r =RSS

Other effects:

-Studies have proven that the lack of sleep develops since people choose to use their time to sleep to either text or to talk on the phone. Example:at Katholieke University it was found that almost 60% of students used their cell phones either to talk or text message after turning their lights out at bedtime. URL: www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1658166,00.html

-In the study of 361 men it was proven that more hours spent on cellphpnes are known to lower a man’s sperm count and increase abnormal sperms.

 6. 6. What proof is there against this?

A Danish study (2004) that took place over 10 years and found no evidence to support a link.

A Swedish study (2005) that draws the conclusion that "the data do not support the hypothesis that mobile phone use is related to an increased risk of glioma or meningioma.“

A British study (2005) that draws the conclusion that "The study suggests that there is no substantial risk of acoustic neuroma in the first decade after starting mobile phone use. However, an increase in risk after longer term use or after a longer lag period could not be ruled out.“

A German study (2006) that states "In conclusion, no overall increased risk of glioma or meningioma was observed among these cellular phone users; however, for long-term cellular phone users, results need to be confirmed before firm conclusions can be drawn.

URL:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_radiation_and_health#Health_hazards_of_handsets

 7. 7. Wi-Fi Risks to health
 8. 8. Wi-Fi

Stands for ‘ Wi reless Fi delity”

Radio frequency method of connecting devices such as computers together.

Wireless connections established.

Uses high frequency radio signals.

 9. 9. How it works

Through one wireless router, signals are emitted to many different devices to be connected together.

Router When the router is on, it emits wireless signals for all devices to be connected. When it is off, then all devices lose the connectivity and can no longer communicate.
 10. 10. Why can it be harmful? According to some studies made by ‘The Telegraph’, exposure to wireless waves interfere with the human body and can create problems such as: Sleep disturbance Short term Memory loss Lethargy Cardiac problems
 11. 11. However…

Claims made about harmfulness have not been completely proven.

No real proof to demonstrate this.

Just a few cases in which people have suffered from problems mentioned before.

Testimonial:

I spent many years working with ultra-high power arc furnaces. loads of 70 megawatts were common. The electrical field around these things could literary make your hair stand on end. Nobody that I worked with never suffered ill effects from exposure. I am in my 80s & still in good health. Exposure to low frequency in high power lines is not a health problem

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1549944/Warning-on-wi-fi-health-risk-to-children.html

Researches have found cases in which people suffer from such symptoms.

Testimonial:

“ When we went on-line in the home, I purchased a wireless router for my lap-top. Within a short time four members of a healthy family of five adults showed symptoms of lethargy, memory loss and sleep disturbance.”

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1549944/Warning-on-wi-fi-health-risk-to-children.html

AGAINST FOR
 12. 12. Implications

If the claims about the effects were true:

Millions would be affected.

Whole cities are now connected using Wi-Fi = Large number of people affected.

Laptop applications used by US population:

Check e-mail 86%

Prepare documents 85%

Log on to Internet 74%

Log into corporate network 59%

Scheduling 48% Presentations 45%

Entertainment 36%

Almost ALL of them use Wi-Fi connections.

 13. 13. Effects:

Secondary effects could arise as people begin to implement Wi-Fi in schools as well as in cafes and public places , people which have no intention to make use of it will also be affected

Young people are more susceptible to this due to the development of technology and their constant use of both cell phones and Wi-Fi.

It can be linked to second hand and passive smoking due to its effects on second parties and those not aware of it.

It could lead to legal issues towards the places who implement these technologies if there is any harm caused to the public

Physiological damage could be caused to victims who were not aware of the consequences if any harm is to be detected.
