Editor's Notes
Good MorningIntroductionsWe are representing a broader team of economic and planning officials, and elected officials, from the CountyThank you for having usWe’d appreciate your interest in speaking with usWe’d like to tell you about our region, and learn about how we can work with you, …and perhaps assist you in your investment attraction mission
We would like to introduce you to Middlesex County and let you get to know us better…We have some great companies in Middlesex County and they are very happy there…we’d like to tell you why they are there and introduce you to some of them…(and we hope that you’ll have an opportunity to meet them if you come to visit us)We know that you have lots of visits like this, we’d like to give you some ideas on how to identify the best prospects for MiddlesexWe’d like to talk with you about how we can work together to accomplish our mutual goalsAnd make sure you know who to contact when you have questions, prospects, or opportunities…
Our location is key providing us with easy access to Canada and the United States Chicago is 310 miles – or about 6 hours on a good day - from Middlesex County’s offices in London.Agriculture manufacturingAdvanced ??Technical tradesAutomotive sector Transportation an important component of our businessesVari-Form = auto supplier -is shipping to plants in KentuckyCooper standard – supplies Chrysler (J.I.T delivery is key)As as such London companies as….
– the 401 and 402 meet in Middlesex and provide access to border crossings in Windsor/Detroit, Sarnia/Port Huron, and Niagara Falls/Buffalo.The highways also provide access to the rest of Canada through the GTA.
We have an international airport, excellent rail access, and also lake access to both Huron and Erie…By the way, the county is made up of 8 municipalities and the municipalities have equal representation on the county council, which sits in London. And, as you now, the county surrounds London, but does not include London.
We think that there are a number of good reasons for companies to consider Middlesex County and to move there…We will talk about each of these in detail…..An extension to London, a compliment to London, part of the London region
but London contributes a great deal to the County. We offer an exceptional workforce to prospective employers (workforce of 250,000 in the region). We can draw from London, from Middlesex County municipalities and unincorporated areas, and from the surrounding regions. We think this gives us the best of all worlds. The rural labour pool has stronger mechanical skills and a great work ethic. The County population becomes more urban the closer we get to London, and we gain from having some fantastic educational resources in and around London, including Fanshawe College (largest community college in Ontario – 16,000) and the University of Western Ontario (33,000 ft students)The research facilities in the Middlesex-London region both private and institutional, are renowned for their advances in all areas. The Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources is a research institute within the University of Western Ontario. The new 20,000-square-foot research centre, located a few minutes north of the City of London in Middlesex County, opened in2009. ICFAR is a leader in developing technologies and processes for producing chemicals and fuels from alternative resources.
The Middlesex County economy is diverse and varied.Reflecting the London & Middlesex regionwe have a number of areas where companies will find that they are not alone and that there is good knowledge, expertise and experience in their field. Here are some examples:We have a very strong and active agribusiness sector. We have a strong agricultural base and have many food processors and distributors in the region. Bonduelle – recent announcement of Dr. Oetker sourcing the whole region.STEMERGY, a renewable fibre company focuses on producing and supplying renewable bio-fibres - derived from annual stem fiber plants such as flax and hemp – to the expanding global bio-fiber marketplace. Using annual plants such as hemp and flax that convert solar energy and green house gases to produce useful renewable bio-fiber materials makes good economic and environmental sense.Mouse ClickWe have a strong and growing advanced manufacturing sector, with many companies in the automotive industry doing some very exciting work and innovating for global customers. Wescast Industries designs and develops optimized hot end exhaust solutions for today’s ever-changing, fast-paced global automotive market.Mouse ClickAnd also for the automotive market, Autotube manufactures millions of inlet / outlet tubes each year using precision tooling. Each part is 100% inspected to the strictest tolerances.
Across the county, we have industrial sites available for investment and development. There are some that are shovel ready today, and others that can be made ready as required by investors.
Middlesex advantage: Rural settings Project costs are lower All benefits of the urban amenities
Greg to speakArmatec was actually founded in London in 1997 The demand for their armored and protection solutions grew rapidly, and they ended up with 7 facilities spread around London and they anticipated continued growth. They wanted to remain in the region but also consolidate into one location. And they selected a location in Dorchester, in Thames Center, not far from London. They are the anchor tenant in an industrial park that has more capacity….What they doWho they sell to$ revenue – recent contract# of employees - 340Date they started in Middlesex – 2010 (but started 20 years ago in Thorndale)How much they’ve grown -What they’ve said they like

We thought that we could leave you with a quick description of some ways to identify opportunities that we might be able to assist clients on…We’ve identified some of the industries where there are multiple companies in the County and where there is labour expertise and skills. We’ve also listed a couple of key criteria…..But no matter what your client might be looking for, we’d be happy to look at the requirements and see if we have a reasonable and responsive solution.
